TMW2010 Wrote:Ok.. I'm confused as far as what you're saying?

If you're talking about the fact that they have different course numbers, and that fact alone should give you credit for both Business Stats and Intro or SBS, that's not always the case, even at different colleges. Many different colleges that I've seen will say similiar courses duplicate even through they're in different subtypes. (History & PoliSci, English & History, so on & so forth.) They're usually a lot more clear about it and point this fact outright in the catalog (Which can be a huge cluster when transfering in credits to the big 3 from various sources, because from what I've seen, if it has a shadow of similarity, they'll yell duplicate!, no matter how many people before you got full credit.) Did they actually tell you in writing that those credits would not duplicate initially?

Actually, I'm not sure what's unclear. OPM351 is considered a Business Management course and the STA201 is considered a Math course. They shouldn't duplicate. I had requested a list from advisement regarding the ALEKS breakdown because I was sick and tired of calling them constantly about each course and then sometimes you would get conflicting information on a course that was ok'd earlier on the phone. After I took Beginning Algebra I took courses according to this list so I wouldn't be taking a course I wouldn't be getting credit for. By chance when I requested them to place these ALEKS courses on my academic evaluation is when I found out all the Stats classes are considered STA201 even though the email shows otherwise. The people at advisement apologized to me for not giving me the right information but told me that they couldn't give me credit for more than one Stats class.

Ok I found this response in my ticket history. Again I deleted personal info as well as the advisor's name.

XXXXX, since you received prior approval to apply ALEKS0007 to your degree, I can not approve ALEKS0008. Be advised that the course description is the same for ALEKS0007/0008/0009; they're all equivalent to STA-201.
Best of luck with your remaining credits.

Lindagerr Wrote:Dr. Keel posted an answer to my appeal for all advisors to be on the same page. BUT he avoided giving me what I need in writing. So I called and asked for it, but Nia has already left for the day. So I have a phone appointment with Dr. Keel Monday morning. I will ask him to PUT IT IN WRITING so I don't have to worry about the next person changing it again.

Here is his reply:

Good Afternoon Linda and et.al: First things first, your comments, good, bad, indifferent never fall on deaf ears, so please always feel free to share. This board is a wonderful opportunity for students to share with each other but always feel free to contact me directly through my secretary at 609-984-1141 ext. 3310 or 3305 if you have a very specific question. I try to, but do not always get a chance to check this board as often as I would like, so never leave a specific issue out there hoping that I will see it, just reach me directly.

Having said all of that, let me offer the following. NO EXCUSE. That's right, I can say unequivocally that there is NO EXCUSE for you to get conflicting answers to a very specific and legitimate question. All advisors are trained to answer general questions pertaining to most degrees. A question like, does a particular exam count or what is its TESC equivalence is exactly the kind of general questions that are easily answered by any one on the advising staff. Will mistakes happen. Absolutely, but we try to and we know that from the thousands of successful students, mistakes are held to an absolute minimum. In your particular case, I am not sure where the mixup occurred with this particular ALEKS exam, but I can assure you and all of your classmates that you should be very comfortable in getting answers from an advisor on these types of general questions. However, if you have a specific question about a specific course/exam and how it fits into your specific degree program, then I always recommend that you speak with an advisor who is assigned to that particular program. This is best accomplished through an appointment with an advisor in the specific program.

I love that man, and I love that he uses et al....so educated sounding. Anyway, let's hope this is the end of it!:hurray:

In every situtation, if TESC assigns a diff number, it shouldn't duplicate- however, as I understand them, THEY have decided that all stats-no matter the number- duplicate STATS. I think what they are doing with the OPM is taking it OUT of general education math and placing it into business which would mean FREE ELECTIVE to anyone not in a business major. That said, the highest utility (and safety IMO) would be intro stats.

Cook, I agree. I just wanted to make a point that TESC does make mistakes in writing and they will apologize for making a mistake but still have you holding the bag in the end. I think getting the courses on your evaluation is KEY but I understand why people, due to time constraints, may move ahead based on information on this forum. Which is why I believe we need to put out the most current and accurate info. we possibly can.

BTW, I think it's awesome that you are still involved helping others considering you've already graduated and a lot of this has no effect on you:hurray: .

Does this mean that ALEKS Beginning Algebra is accepted by TESC as a college-level course? I took both ALEKS Beginning & Intermediate Algebra and just officially enrolled at TESC. In speaking with TESC, they couldn't tell me for sure until the transcript from ACE arrived - just ordered this today to be sent over to them. I'm trying to finish BA in Liberal Studies and depending upon how Beginning Algebra is accepted this will determine which course I have to take at TESC - Earth Science or Middle East History (I hope for the latter). Thanks. Btw, that was the bad news I got today that I would need to take 1 class through TESC in order to have a GPA. I had thought my community college classes would take care of that, but apparently not. So depending upon how both ALEKS classes are received, this will determine which of the 2 remaning courses I will take the DSST exam and which one I'll take the class at TESC. Sad

IrishJohn, yes Beginning Algebra will be accepted. I just got it accepted within the last 2 months to complete my AA. Cook's updated list is right, except now every Stats class is STA201 now. If you need to call TESC ever about ALEKS I suggest you talk to Nia Abuwi because as you can see from this thread depending on the advisor you speak to you may get a different answer which can put you in the wrong state of mind like a lot of us have gone through. Good luck!

Which one of the algebra courses is equivalent to the CLEP Algebra test??? I was assuming it is MAT121???

Begining Algebra will be given 3 credits, as Free Elective credits. They do not promise you will get the 3 credits as math credits, it will depend on your program.

I am satisfied, I don't care what the put the credits under I just wanted assurance I would get them.

Okay, I am rather confused and worried. I just saw the latest postings on this thread and my heart is now positioned somewhere in my throat.

After 3 agonizing months, I finally assessed at over 70% on ALEKS Beginning Algebra. I actually just made it over the hump this past Friday 02/26/2010. I am enrolled at TESC in the BA of Liberal Studies program. I was under the impression that Beginning Algebra would satisfy the 3 credit college-level Mathematics requirement as MAT102. I never wrote to TESC and asked for permission because so many others were getting the credit.

Will ALEKS Beginning Algebra fulfill the math requirement for a BA in Liberal Studies?

I have no confidence in math and I don't think that I can go through this again.
