Principles of Accounting - lhodgdon - 09-20-2006

Ok, well after studying for about three weeks now, I've decided to take the Principles of Accounting CLEP on Friday (9/22). I'm a little nervous, especially after reading some of the posts. This will be my first CLEP exam and its kinda a now or never thing. I need another 9 credits if I want to transfer to a university next semester (my work pays for my school, but requires you to have 60 credits before you transfer). Then I found out my husband is going to Iraq for three months beginning October 9 (we both work for a government contractor). So I have to squeeze this one in before he leaves, because between working F/T, my traditional classes, and our two children there's no way I'll be working on any CLEP tests while he's gone or at least until finals are over. I'm pretty solid on the financial accounting stuff, but I'm just going to have to really concentrate on the managerial stuff. Sorry didn't mean to ramble, just needed to vent a little. Thanks snazzlefrag for your post on what areas to concentrate on. I'll definately make sure I'm good on those areas.

I passed! The test was a lot harder than I thought. I used the college board study guide on the Army's website. Well there's a newer one on the college board website. I didn't think there'd be that big of a difference, so I didn't buy the newer one. Well I think there might be. The older one's questions were a lot like Instant Cert's. Well the questions on the exam didn't resemble them at all. I did pass with a 52. If I wasn't in such a time crunch, I would have waited, because I didn't feel that confident. Oh, well. A pass is a pass. Now I need to decide if I want to CLEP Prin of Management or Princ of Marketing. Any suggestions?

CONGRATULATIONS Lynette! Now you can put that one behind you.

If I were you, I would go with Principles of Management for your next exam...it's one of the easiest CLEP exams.

Good luck!

Well done Lynette,

It's all over with now! Those six shiny new Accounting credits look GREAT on you.
hilarious

Principles of Management is one of the easiest exams I have taken. I found Principles of Marketing to be slightly harder, but still in the 'easy' category.

If you need a quick morale booster, go for Principles of Management first.

Congratulations again on passing your Accounting exam,

First, QUICK, take this test before June, 2007 - it will be divided into two tests!!! Now it is one test for six credits!!!

I passed this one after studying a *month*, which is a really long time for me. I didn't study every day, but I took this slow and in retrospect I am glad I did. This is a tough test. You cannot guess. You can't have a calculator. I didn't have time to read the last *10* questions - that's right. I just looked at the answers and guessed. I studied REA's two little books, Accting 1 and 2. And then picked up a huge Managerial Accting text book to review for a couple of days before the test - which is worth it! There are a lot of questions on it! I know Managerial Accting can get super in depth, but the questions on the test just made sure you understood the big picture on MA. As far as the other, yes, you do have to know how to work out some problems, but I'll tell you the biggest thing that helped me was knowing definitions COLD - like preferred stock, or what is an Income Statement, etc.

Principles of Accounting - Librevore - 10-23-2006

Hi all,

Passed Principles of Accounting on Friday with a 62. I am so relieved. Wanted to have it done before the change next year. Yay! Because of my intermittent internet situation it wouldn't have happened without the help of Dale and Snazz. So I want to be sure and say thanks you two!!! I owe you.

As far as what to study, the advice in this thread is right on. Knowing the definitions, taking practice tests, using the great online sites Principles of Accounting and Accounting Coach along with IC, etc.

Perhaps the best help I can add is a comment on strategy. 5 questions into this test I was sure I was going to fail. Even though I had studied and was doing well on the practice tests these questions were way over my head and I realized that I was spending a long time on them. So I decided to just mark every question that I couldn't answer right away to come back to later. As I kept going this was a real confidence booster. By the end of the first time through, I knew that I had answered a lot of questions correctly and they were all safely in the bag, so to speak. Then it was a matter of going back through the marked ones and just doing my best but knowing that I had so many right took the pressure off. I don't remember who it was but a huge thank you to whoever first mentioned doing a test this way. If you hadn't posted this info. I'm not sure that I would have thought of it. This group is great!

Ever upward,
