recommended premed major ADVICE WANTED - rebel100 - 03-25-2016 Dude with a PhD in English is called "doctor" ![]() recommended premed major ADVICE WANTED - sanantone - 03-25-2016 rebel100 Wrote:Dude with a PhD in English is called "doctor" When I finish my PhD in Criminal Justice (or if I finish), I will be a doctor. I'm still debating whether or not I should let people call me doctor as a substance abuse counselor because my coworkers have already said that they're going to. CJ is not a counseling, therapy, or psychology degree, but the Texas Department of State Health Services says it counts as waiving the internship requirement for licensing. There are some CJ programs with addictions counseling concentrations, but mine is not one of them. Texas does consider the Certified Criminal Justice Addictions Professional credential to be the equivalent of a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor in criminal justice settings. But, outside of the healthcare field, I will have no problem with being called doctor. The OP should keep in mind that it is the norm to call professors and college instructors with PhDs doctor no matter what their doctorate is in. recommended premed major ADVICE WANTED - bluebooger - 03-25-2016 you can now get a PhD in nursing and call yourself a Doctor and its making MDs, DOs and even quite a few nurses very unhappy recommended premed major ADVICE WANTED - rebel100 - 03-25-2016 I'm fully aware Sanantone, and I don't begrudge anyone who has earned the title their full use of it. I do think that folks recurving medical care ought to understand the difference between MD, DO, and Chiropractor. recommended premed major ADVICE WANTED - sanantone - 03-25-2016 bluebooger Wrote:you can now get a PhD in nursing and call yourself a Doctor You can also practice independently as a nurse practitioner and be called doctor with a DNP. I think one should keep in mind the setting. If you're in a hospital or clinic with MDs and DOs, then it's probably not a good idea for a nurse practitioner to call himself or herself doctor because it could lead to confusion among the patients. It's probably not a good idea in an independent practice either. At a college, it doesn't matter. In a mental health setting, psychologists are normally called doctors. Someone with a PhD in Counseling may cause confusion if her or she were to go by doctor because counselors cannot practice on the same level as psychologists. recommended premed major ADVICE WANTED - bluebooger - 03-25-2016 http://www.modernhealthcare.com/article/20141230/NEWS/312309974 you don't even have to have a doctorate to practice independently as an NP jsut need experience and a Masters degree recommended premed major ADVICE WANTED - sanantone - 03-25-2016 bluebooger Wrote:http://www.modernhealthcare.com/article/20141230/NEWS/312309974 I didn't say you needed a doctorate to practice independently. I said that you can practice independently as a nurse practitioner AND be called doctor with a DNP. You can't call yourself doctor with an MSN. Maybe I should have worded that differently. recommended premed major ADVICE WANTED - cookderosa - 03-26-2016 clep3705 Wrote:Home - Student Doctor Network | A nonprofit educational organization Keep your armor on and take regular breaks. recommended premed major ADVICE WANTED - jgbenjamin - 03-26-2016 How many volunteer hours do I need on my hs transcript to look impressive and what would be an average number?? recommended premed major ADVICE WANTED - clep3705 - 03-26-2016 In all seriousness, this is a good discussion.
