TESU Computer science process question - jch - 06-23-2023 (06-23-2023, 12:34 AM)rachel83az Wrote: Actually, there may be a "warning" in the form of an email saying that you've registered for a TECEP that doesn't fit with your degree plan and maybe you made a mistake? "Please talk to an advisor." That kind of thing. When I've been in that situation in the past with a different TECEP, TESU actually pulled my registration until I followed up with advising. Be careful. "Please talk to an advisor." That kind of thing. Agreed, if you receive the message - just email advising that it was intentional and you wish to remain enrolled for the TECEP. They are actually just trying to be helpful by letting you know you signed up for something that you 'can't use' in your planned degree (or at least that is what they believe ) RE: TESU Computer science process question - emmaya - 06-24-2023 (06-23-2023, 10:57 AM)rachel83az Wrote:(06-23-2023, 10:36 AM)emmaya Wrote:(06-23-2023, 01:59 AM)rachel83az Wrote: You will need 24 RA credits from somewhere + capstone & cornerstone from TESU in order to get your degree. Do you have at least 24 RA credits or RA-equivalent foreign credits on your TESU transcript yet? Can I only take the Diploma of Higher Education in Tourism and Business Management in XAMK? It consists of a total of 60 ECTS credits. Does this program cover the RA credits? How can I determine which subjects match the RA credits at TESU? Thanks a lot !!~ RE: TESU Computer science process question - bjcheung77 - 06-25-2023 emmaya Wrote:rachel83az Wrote:In that case, you're going to need to prioritize your RA credits. You can try using (almost) free XAMK credits - mostly in the electives. Once you've figured out your RA and RA-equivalent credits, fill in as much as you can with Sophia credits. They're one of the fastest/cheapest ways to get credits for TESU. Most of the rest will need to come from Study.com. Yes you can take the Tourism & Business Diploma from XAMK. Yes, it translates to 30 RA credits. Yes, as Rachel83AZ mentioned, these are all going to be your elective credits at the bottom of the degree plan and won't go into your general education nor area of study/major. There are so many ways of getting those credits cheap, easy, fast and from different providers, I would skip the XAMK you mentioned and go for XAMK Video Game Creation for 25 ECTS instead and do the BACS/BSBA CIS. Now get this, instead of going for the XAMK option, you can take courses that will go directly towards the degree major/general education requirements with Metropolia. I suggest you copy/paste the degree plan into an excel file, remove the duplicate courses and it'll show you all 40+ courses you need to take, the degree plan is already on the WIKI for the BACS/BSBA CIS. Here's Rachel83AZ version, there is a link to reference LevelUP's version too: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sample_TESU_BACS_and_BSBA_CIS_Double_Degree_Plan_(rachel83az_version) RE: TESU Computer science process question - emmaya - 06-28-2023 I have chosen courses, but I'm unsure about their difficulty. I want to select courses that will be more helpful for my future programming skills and have less theoretical content. Could you please provide me with some advice? Do you happen to know anyone who has earned credits for the course "XAMK-Introduction to Video Games Creation"? I'm interested in learning about the difficulty level and the number of exams involved. Also, I currently don't plan to pursue a career in game development. Is it possible for me to start by taking courses on platforms like Sophia.org or study.com? What are the differences between completing RA credits and completing 45 credits first? Thank you! Does it have any connection to my current studies? By American standards, the XAMK Video Games Creation courses are strange. By XAMK standards, even, those courses are strange. Everything is held off-site and there are no exams as you know them. There are a couple of quizzes in the intro modules, but that's it. Most of the modules are completed with an essay-type paper, a programming project, or a Blender modeling project. It's meant to be a very basic intro to everything, so it's challenging if you've not done this sort of thing before but it's not difficult. You also won't have direct access to your transcripts if you only go for the certificate. If you take at least one other XAMK course, you should be able to access Pippi (though results are mixed? this advice may no longer apply for new students). The XAMK certificate is currently 35 ECTS (the wiki has been updated now), which may translate to only 17.5 US semester credits. Add another 5 ECTS class to gain access to your transcripts and you're at 20 semester credits. Unless you're going to do a 16-credit term at TESU, you'll need another ~10 ECTS (for a total of 50 ECTS/25 semester credits) to meet the RA credit requirements. If you're doing a flat-rate 16-credit term, you've got sufficient ECTS planned. (06-28-2023, 02:03 AM)emmaya Wrote: Also, I currently don't plan to pursue a career in game development. Due to Sophia grading lag, you might want to sign up for XAMK first so that you will have something to work on while waiting for your Sophia grades to come back. With SDC, if you use up your exam attempts for the month, there may also be some downtime to work on XAMK classes. There are no hard deadlines with this XAMK certificate, so don't worry about running out of time while you work on Sophia or SDC. Do you mean the 45 gen ed credits? If so, there is no meaningful difference with where you start, except what you are comfortable with. You have Software Engineering on there from both OSU and Saylor. These will almost certainly overlap. Pick one. Otherwise, you'll have wasted time and energy on the other when it's not needed. (06-28-2023, 02:03 AM)emmaya Wrote: Additional question: If you're doing both the BSBA CIS and the BACS, as you appear to be doing, a 16-credit term will save you money. But you ALSO have Software Engineering here? Only take it once, please. If you're taking it at TESU, you don't need it from OSU or Saylor. Also, unfortunately, the 1-credit PLA-100 appears to no longer be offered. The wiki should now be updated to reflect this. I haven't taken that course, but I will say that, in general, game development skills are easy to apply to all kinds of application development. Unfortunately, the course requirements for CS degrees have to live up to the "science" in the name, and tend to be theoretical. The good developers take those courses as students, while also doing tons of self-directed programming projects, internships, robotics labs, etc... I updated the Google sheet; please help me view it again. I’ll follow your advice: Enroll XAMK course. Enroll on Sophia.org, complete the course, and then enroll on study.com. Thank you for your thoughtful and considerate response to each message and suggestion. RE: TESU Computer science process question - rachel83az - 06-29-2023 For what to take at XAMK: that's on you. Whatever looks easiest or most interesting. XAMK is always adding/changing courses available on their course calender: https://www.xamk.fi/en/openstudies/ This one is sort of computer related: https://www.xamk.fi/en/open-amk-courses/digital-skills-in-hospitality-service-production-nonstop-start-5-ects-cr/ Make sure to check the cost when looking at courses. This one is not free; it's 60€ (approx. $65USD): https://www.xamk.fi/en/open-amk-courses/create-a-website-with-wordpress-5-ects-cr-3/ And some of them may not be fully online, such as this one possibly requiring in-person attendance: https://www.xamk.fi/en/open-amk-courses/trusted-computing-master-school-5-ects-cr/ RE: TESU Computer science process question - bjcheung77 - 06-29-2023 @emmaya, Oh and I believe a few people who have had their XAMK evaluated favorably, but yet to have anyone report on Metropolia yet. That was the main reason I mentioned to look at both LevelUP's plus Rachel83AZ version to customize your own, I would recommend using Metropolia only for electives/lower level for the Major/AOS and get the remainder of the UL from Study.com |
