Personally, I hate Sophia’s ENG courses they are too long and take forever to get you feedback for your touchstones..

I spent 70+ days on Eng Comp 2 on Sophia and still had 1 more paper to go. The grading was horrible. I lost points for things not in the rubric in every paper except 1. I had the same grader for 5 out of 6 papers. I really wondered if the grader hated my topic. I never recommend Eng Comp from Sophia. It's just dreadful.

Can he do Modern States then CLEP?  I was under the impression that the English Comp with Module CLEP test satisfied both 1 and 2 - thought I read that somewhere.

Yes, I confirmed with Jessica that CLEP satisfies both Comp 1 and 2. Im going to go that route.

Definitely better at UMPI....I completed it in 2 days

Cool, I assume this is in Brightspace and not the old Strut system? Amazing, I'll continue to recommend completing UMPI courses such as these instead of transferring them in...

Yes this is brightspace.  I am enrolled this current session. I finished 2 courses my first week. Some have finished more than that. You just got to write until you can't write no more lol

I think a LOT of advice/comments in this forum will be a bit out of date because of the change to Brightspace. The posters here have been awesome, but the move to Brightspace seems to have changed things quite a bit

For all you guys who did your UMPI classes pre-Brightspace, your timing and challenge level was probably a different experience.

Brightspace definitely seems to have made things tougher and longer.

I took one semester before Brightspace, and now I'm using Brightspace, and the courses seem much much longer now.

I honestly don't see how anyone could do the whole "10 classes in 10 days cuz I stayed up all night!" thing anymore.

The UMPI business class I'm in, has textbooks (.pdf format tho, and not searchable) that we have to read chapters in, videos, lectures, etc.  Not super impossible or anything, but definitely more involved than before. Just the two chapters I've had to read so far have been pretty long reads and I haven't made it to my first milestone yet. I still have a bunch more to do before I get to it.

I've been talking to several currently enrolled students. Some were enrolled prior to Brightspace. Some classes have longer Final Assessments, but they're still far less work than a B&M course.

PDF textbooks can be search in Adobe Reader. You couldn't search in Strut either. In Strut you had many screens to read that were from textbooks, videos, and websites to read. Not much different really.

There were very few people who completed 10 courses in 10 days. UMPI has stated for years that the average is 3-4 courses per session. There will always be outliers. One shouldn't compare themselves those.

Well, I know that we SHOULD be able to search our .pdf textbooks in Adobe Reader, but my current one, Fundamentals of Information Systems, for UMPI Bus 244 class is not searchable. It's a big book, so it's def a pain getting to the chapters we are supposed to read.

And I have taken courses in both systems here at UMPI, and I think their classes through Brightspace are taking longer than before, and I think they are more complex, and I think you'll see more and more people saying that.

Yes, it's still more convenient than commuting/taking a B&M class, but I think UMPI has def upped their game in their online courses. Which is ultimately a good thing, but I think people should be aware that the classes seem to be more challenging than before.

And it may take a little longer to get thru all the course work than it was before.

I started English Comp I on 8/5 and finished submitting papers  8/22 and final grade was 8/31. So not a bad run. I got an 87% for my final grade.

Today I started English Comp II at Sophia and I finished the first two touchstones in about 3 hours time.  I’m really hoping to get things back in the week but see no reason why I can’t work ahead of the argumentative draft some.  If it takes 70 days I’ll be shocked, but it’s ok because I timed this mid-course so I can finish a lot of milestone only coursework between grades.

With Eng Comp 2, you can only submit 1 paper at a time. you have to wait for each paper to be graded before submitting the next. When I took it, I was waiting 2 weeks - sometimes longer - for grading. The grading was awful. I lost points on every paper except 1 for things not in the instructions or rubric. I had the same grader for each of those papers. The grader definitely seemed biased and disliked my topic immensely which is interesting since it was about how nature benefits our mental health. The grader needed to get outdoors! I dropped it and completed it at UMPI in 3 days with an A+.

RE: ENG 121 - pjmix2000 - 09-20-2023

I just receive my grade for my final project for the Eng 121.
overall, it is way faster than Sophia and I really enjoy this course.

RE: ENG 121 - bjcheung77 - 09-20-2023

Maybe check out another option or two: If you really need it cheap, easy, fast, the CLEP should be an option if you're alright with exams...
