Anila, it is great that you have the option to take the CLEP exam to satisfy the English Language Proficiency. My question still applies though. Must you take the College Composition exam (multiple-choice section plus 2 typewritten essays) or can you take the College Composition Modular (multiple-choice section plus optional essays might be required but not included in the score)?

Thank you BGSU_Alum_86. I see College Composition there in the college website, but I didn't see college composition modular. That's why I don't know whether they accept Modular or not? You mean, you think multiple choice section will be easy for me? As you see, I'm very poor in English, Multiple section also will be hard right ?Smile
Thanks.

[Are teams or groups beneficial for individuals, or does group membership prevent individuals from forming their own moral judgments? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your studies, experience and observations.]
Anila, I was thinking about your essay as I drove home. The question posed is actually about groups helping or hindering the development of an individual's moral judgements. I have no idea how much they take into account responding to the question, but I would guess a certain percentage. You never really respond to the moral question, unless the reference to a romantic involvement in paragraph 2 is alluding to it, (depending on what that entailed!) You are simply offering the benefits of being in groups versus being on your own. Just something else to take into consideration!
The reason I suggested the flash cards on IC for English Composition is that they will help you with some of the basic errors you are making. Again, I am not an expert, far from it, but they are helping me a lot. I have a long way to go too. Good luck!

Anila your english is better than some natural born Americans. You just need to get a better grasp on the little points that make it different then many other languages.

I don't know what your native language is but one of the things that gave me a hard time back Many many years ago when I tried to learn Spanish was the what I cal opposite way we word things. We would say "How old are you?" In Spanish they say "¿Cuántos años tienes?" to me that said "How many years do you have?" I can say several words in Spanish that does not mean I could write a sentence or an essay that would make sense.

You are doing an amazing job, but I think you would really benefit from an actual in seat class to help you write in english. Being able to write papers and answer written question will be part of your college career through out the years. Getting a better handle on this now could make all further writing less frustrating.

Anila, I would contact your school's registrar and ask -- it can't hurt! For some people, it is easier to just answer the multiple-choice questions and NOT have to write any essays. Which school is this? Have you looked to see what shows up on the CLEP site under their name?

Many many thanks to Lindagerr and BGSU_Alum_86 again. It is great help for me. You guys are awesome.@BGSU_Alum_86, I'm looking for Saint Leo University ( Education Center in Gainesville Florida), this is the college link. Search | Saint Leo University . And I also wondering about the difficulty of the exam. CLEP Modular will be easier than TOEFL? I think this is funny question. Currently, I'm lost. I don't know which way I choose? Modular will be good than TOEFL because from Modular, I can get some credit for further study too. @ Lindagerr, I will trr my best. Thank you so much for the encouraging words for me. It's always appreciated as always. Big Grin.

After checking out their site, it looks like there is no mention of the College Composition Modular exam. Probably safe to assume that is not one of the CLEP exams they would recognize. Good to know...

Thank you BSGU_Alum_86. As per your saying, my writing is very poor for CLEP, so, I think I should start prepare TOEFL instead of taking College composition CLEP right? I know the format of TOEFL but I'm new in CLEP. Please if possible, provide some suggestion. Thanks. Big Grin

Hi Anila,

Your heart is in the right place (you want to succeed). I doubt if I came to your country I could write in your native language very well. Here's a thought…you have only been here since 2011…I don't know your age…but when kids come here in grammar (grades 1-6), middle (7th and 8th grades) and High School (secondary school; or grades 9-12)…they have English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. Of course it's easier if you start learning a second tongue when you are very young. But I think your heart is in the right place and I can tell your focus is on getting a degree. So my advice would be:

1. Contact a few ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers. You might be lucky if you can talk to someone at a local high school, local collage or even if you have a community "Adult School". Many of these teachers offer low cost classes that help you improve your writing and your language skills.
2. Ask for advice from ESL teachers on:
a. Where they think you are at as far as proficiency
b. What your alternatives are to getting college credit
c. Who (which teachers in specific) might be good to take a college level English Comp class with.

I strongly agree with the other comments that the CLEP for composition would be too hard for you based on reading your samples of writing.

The only other help I can offer that helped me was this. Try writing a roman numeral Outline:

Intro: Short intro…think of this like a movie trailer…what's your paper about. Do I want to go see this movie (read this paper)?

I. Topic One (With citations from experts or relevant current info from reputable source Wikipedia does not count the majority of the time; but is good for your own background info).
a. Sub point (or example 1)
b. Sub point (or example 2)
c. Sub point (or example 3)

II. Topic Two (same as above, get some back up or interesting counters to your point to make your argument/case)
a. Sub point (or example 1)
b. Sub point (or example 2)
c. Sub point (or example 3)

III. Topic Three (same as above)
a. Sub point (or example 1)
b. Sub point (or example 2)
c. Sub point (or example 3)

(Note: Use opening statements and clincher or bridge sentences to smoothly move between topics in each area)

Conclusion:
Summarize your opening statement and then site all your points (I,II,II) with a few things you learned that make a difference to the topic at hand. For example, if your topic was how hard it was to raise a teenage daughter, then summarize what/why its hard and then state the guidance learned from studying or knowing more about this topic. Close with a sentence that brings it all home…this is sometimes easy and sometimes hard. Play with different ending sentences now while you have time to practice and ask American English speaking people you like an trust to give you feedback.
-----------
Good Luck! Take the ESL adult school class for starters because it's usually super cheap (I think it's only 30.00 at my adult school) and someone at the adult school (a good ESL teacher) should be able to help you out. I really doubt many could scramble to pass COMP I and II as a non-native speaker who has only been here for 2 years. That's seriously a major mountain.

Hey, where are you from? I don't even know your native tongue to offer specific organizations. My brother was a linguist for a long time and he lives out in California. Even as a language PRO he needs time to develop an understanding of the rules of grammar and punctuation before be would even consider calling it an additional language mastered. I speak some French, but there is no way France would let me in with my terrible speech and grammar! My husband and I even had a private tutor for about a year and a half (the company I worked for was French), and I was not ready to take their ex-pat type entrance exam.

So give yourself a break…and give yourself time and a chance to pass. Talk to a professional who knows exactly how to get you from the 'not so great' level English to confident English in the shortest amount of time.

Again, best of luck!
Tara
