If your son is interested in politics a great internship would be working as a page for your state legislature. I really don't know many of the details on this one. My brother did it last year and there is another guy on here (Farmerboy) that also served as a page here in Idaho. I don't know if they have they same system in your state or not. It would be worth a try!

I'm seeing a lot of homeschool students now who are taking advantage of dual enrollment and dropping the last 2 years of high school. I'm interested to see how this works in the long run (maturity, attitude, family life etc). My 16 year old brother has basically done the same thing but we are doing CLEP and Dantes instead of the B&M stuff. Big Grin

I wrote a letter of appeal to TESC and was accepted with no problems. They want your money so as long as you can prove that your son is competent they should accept him.

Farmerboy,
I was hoping you would answer!

Can I get specifics from you?

On the Application it says "do you have a hs diploma? yes or no"

How did you answer?

Did you send HS transcripts with your application?

Can you send me an example of your Letter of Appeal?

Did you get an AA first then BA?

Thanks for your navigational help!

I hope the above answers are helpful. When I first started I was interested in a double major in poly sci and business. While talking to TESC they indicated that while possible I woiuld have to earn 30 extra credits to satisfy the requirments of the second degree. They also said that you cannot double major in the same general area ex. history and poly sci. What does you son what to do with the double major?

Farmerboy,

Thanks so much for chiming in. You've paved the way and I appreciate you sharing.

Short term: college professor Long Term: something globally, possibly political

He spent a few days at our state capitol recently, so, like you, he may be there interning.

Did you try for both Poli Sci and History or have a specific conversation that they won't grant this double major? Since he has only 4 history courses left, he thought doubling in something would be a goal. Economics was a thought, but it is a BS and History is a BA, so he chose PS. Your insight is appreciated.

Thanks for looking for your letter. Let me know!

I had that specific conversation. In general, they will allow you to double major if one is a BS and the other is a BA. I am really enjoying my internship and would highly reccomend it to anyone. I may post a thread with some details in the next few days.

TESC was very helpful in giving direction without yet being enrolled. The admissions counselor I spoke with had to check with a few folks including the Dean because the policy for Dual Concentration is being rewritten.

The final answer (unofficial since he is not enrolled) is YES, he can get a dual concentration in History and Political Science. The only restriction is that only 9 credits that overlap. The degree requirement must still be met, so he will have 30 additional credits to get for the Poli Sci concentration.

He could apply at 16, but the admissions counselor was certain without a HS diploma, he would not be accepted. I guess we'll cross that bridge in a few months when he applies. He has 5 more cleps to take in the next two months before applying.

For any other parents out there plotting their kids' path:

My son's acceptance letter from TESC came in the mail this week! He's 16 and won't graduate HS until 2011, but does have a significant amount of clep/dante credits accumulated.

Based on Farmerboy's lead, I had him apply so we could start the academic evaluation process and see where he's at. I was hesitant since he had to check the "no" box next to having a HS diploma. But, it wasn't an issue. I included a letter of appeal and his hs transcripts for good measure.

My two cents.....The Academic process is always evolving. The things that a frown up on today will become the norm tomorrow. Members of this forum see these changes around us everyday.

I anxiously and excitely await the start of children first CLEP/DANTES.
