RE: Can you point me in the right direction? - Livia_Drusila - 03-06-2024 So, to update y'all, I created this spreadsheet and I'm having a lot of fun. Right now I'm at the General Education Curriculum. To be honest, it's been so long (10 years) since I finished the AA that I would enjoy refreshing my memory on several courses, especially College Algebra (I remember I barely passed it) and U.S. History I. Maybe I could just audit those for free somewhere? Also, I'm not exactly sure if I should re-do the basic English composition courses. The Maine credits website didn't recognize FSU's English comp courses, so should I re-take them? Maybe this is something that I can ask UMPI directly, but they implied that they don't give out that information until after applying... RE: Can you point me in the right direction? - jg_nuy - 03-06-2024 I doubt very much that UMPI will not take your FSU English classes. It may simply be that there haven't been many transfers from FSU to UMPI. You won't know for sure until you apply, but FSU is regionally accredited, so very, very likely that your credits will be fine. RE: Can you point me in the right direction? - Livia_Drusila - 03-07-2024 I have a question. Do all the FSU credits automatically become a part of my new GPA, or do I have a chance to choose the ones with the best qualifications? For example, I'd rather exclude the subjects where I have Bs or Cs. I know this may sound nit-pickyish because my GPA is not so bad, but since I have the chance to re-do everything now that I'm older and it's not so expensive in Sophia and SDC, I'd like to take advantage of it... Thank you! RE: Can you point me in the right direction? - jg_nuy - 03-07-2024 (03-07-2024, 10:54 AM)Livia_Drusila Wrote: I have a question. Thank you! UMPI will calculate its own institutional GPA based on the classes you take there. Can you point me in the right direction? - jch - 03-07-2024 Your GPA does not carry over between institutions. At any new institution you go to, you'll receive a new institutional GPA for the courses taken there. Transfer credits will be treated as credit received/passed as long as you meet the minimum grade required, and will not be included in the calculation. There is something called overall or cumulative GPA, which does include everything at all institutions. It's very rarely, if ever, needed - most people just want institutional GPA from the last place you attended/where your degrees were granted. There are minimal options for you to replace college credits you passed with less-than-great grades. Doing so may not be practical or worthwhile. Typically, you can't replace existing graded credits with ACE credit or other alt-credit types. Also, many institutions may not allow you to take or receive credit/acknowledgement for a course if you've already received credit for it somewhere. This means that the grades from third parties like Sophia wouldn't matter either, only the grades for the 30 credits taken at UMPI? And also, they just wrote me telling me of their requirements for enrollment. They need my high school diploma and university education from Argentina to be translated and sent by an evaluation service. I've been looking this up and it seems extremely expensive and just a bummer... I asked my mom to get ahold of my high school diploma in person (they don't have a website or anything, it's a very basic public school), maybe she can mail it to me. It's silly because FSU only asked for the plain transcripts, no fancy evaluations or anything. I just read on reddit that someone spent like $600 on WES and it doesn't seem fair, that's like six months worth of Sophia! I'll ask them if they have a waiver. And if they don't, are there any other options you can point me to in my situation? (I don't care much about the major at this point.) Or budget friendly translation/evaluation services that you recommend? Thanks! Can you point me in the right direction? - jch - 03-07-2024 In most cases, the grade you get on ACE- and alt- credit sources such as Sophia does not matter, as long as it's good enough to pass and be accepted. There are a few notable exceptions: rarely, institutions do record grades for those credits (an exception to the general rule I posted above), and sometimes selective graduate degree programs may look at those scores if you have few graded credits. There are also cases where colleges have higher standards required for acceptance of ACE credits (such as "B" grade equivalency) than ACE themselves requires ("C" equivalent). Thus, it's a good idea to try to get at least an 80% in ACE credits if possible. Overall, though, these rare conditions probably won't impact you. RE: Can you point me in the right direction? - bjcheung77 - 03-07-2024 That's correct, institution GPA is only an internal GPA you get when you've taken classes from them, they aren't transferred to another institution. Other colleges or universities will only take that in respect to applications, entry requirements, scholarships, transfer credit, etc. ACE/NCCRS credits, for the most part, do not have GPA associated with them, there are exceptions to this, if the provider is also a college or university, such as Penn Foster College ACE credit and/or Genesis University NCCRS credit, both also have NA by DEAC. Alternative credit doesn't carry the GPA, but some schools may look at the overall completion of these and see how you're doing respectively with your current education and will sometimes look at this for entry requirements. You don't have to worry much... Most of the time, institutions will regard them similar to what they do with AP, IB, CLEP/DSST, and other internal challenge exams or PLA credit, they'll limit the number you can bring in, you still need to complete the remaining residency requirements. RE: Can you point me in the right direction? - davewill - 03-07-2024 You mentioned that you don't have immigration status to work. Do you have status to be a student? Now, I doubt anyone at the schools are going to give you any trouble if you don't, as you'd be free to attend remotely from a foreign country. However, you're not in a foreign country and the INS can be weird about things. Just don't want you to jeopardize your green card application. True, that's something I should think about :/ I'll ask them after their next reply. Between this and the high school thing I'm a little discouraged, but let's see! |
