RE: Schools in America Now Becoming More Insane Than North Korea - sanantone - 07-01-2021 I've never been to Columbia, but I attended the very liberal Texas State University and took classes from liberal sociologists. I was never scolded for liking Jane Austen. I know that when schools teach historical facts, such as the horrors of chattel slavery, the racists call it indoctrination and Critical Race Theory. Obviously, they don't know what CRT is. Right wing extremists believe that the negative parts of U.S. history should not be taught because they're snowflakes. For people who are always complaining about those discussing the past, they sure do have a problem with letting go of the Rebel flag that represents losers and Lost Cause mythology. I did have a conservative criminal justice professor who was a former Republican politician. He told our class that, after reading the research and conducting some of his own, he couldn't deny that there is unequal treatment in the criminal justice system based on race and ethnicity. Of course, the Q cult would call him a RINO for not denying facts. We've seen how Representative Liz Cheney was treated by her own party for not lying, and she's so ultra conservative, she threw her own lesbian sister under the bus. I have had both liberal and conservative professors throughout my career and I work with both types at my full time position. The thing to do is just be open minded and think for yourself. Remember that people are entitled to their opinions and leave it at that. I do have some colleagues who do their best to avoid anything controversial in their classes, as one said to me the other day, "I really do not need the headache of this type of debate nor do I need the complaints." Some of my colleagues do love a good debate, so you do hear about how heated things are in history, pyschology, religion, and criminal justice courses at the moment and the complaints from students are rampant in these courses, as today's students are easily offended. I taught a criminal justice class in 2015 at a traditional university. My students were whiny, but it wasn't because of course content. In criminal justice undergraduate classes, you get the interesting mix of liberal students who are interested in social services and conservative students who just want a degree because they think it's needed to become a cop. The most common complaint I hear from CJ professors is that students are disappointed to find out that CJ is not the police academy.(07-01-2021, 06:02 PM)sanantone Wrote: I've never been to Columbia, but I attended the very liberal Texas State University and took classes from liberal sociologists. Yes, I think so too. The only thing is, there is no sub-forum for that... Off Topic! RE: Schools in America Now Becoming More Insane Than North Korea - LevelUP - 07-05-2021 In high school, information is typically spoon-fed to you and you are told what to believe. In college, you are supposed to learn to think for yourself. There are some professors that seem to just go with the flow and not challenge a student's existing bias and some that are willing to challenge students. Here's a quote I found: Biases can often result in accurate thinking, but also make us prone to errors that can have significant impacts on overall innovation performance as they get in the way, in the modern knowledge economy that we live in and can restrict ideation, creativity, and thinking for innovation outcomes. History is kind of like a story and depending on WHO is telling the story, you can make the story seem good or evil based on how the story is told. RE: Schools in America Now Becoming More Insane Than North Korea - Vle045 - 07-05-2021 Funny…. I couldn’t tell you the political leaning of ANY teacher nor Professor I ever had. I guess I could assume my “Social Problems” teacher in High school might have been conservative because she handed out anti-abortion pamphlets. (But ya know…. When we assume, we make an ass out of u and me). But seriously… why the hell does *EVERYTHING* have to be political?!?! So sick of it. Especially when one side considers themselves good and the other side is bad (this is applicable to both sides). How about we are all complex individuals who may have a variety of opinions that don’t fit 100% of any ideology? Ugh. The country I believe you are referring to is El Salvador. After Nayib Bukele was elected as president, he got control of crime, which became the #1 issue in El Salvador. Currently, Nayib Bukele has a 90% approval rating. El Salvador has been ranked the #1 tourist destination in 2023, so things are looking up for El Salvador. https://www.elsalvadorperspectives.com/2023/02/tourism-is-growing-steadily-in-el.html Since you live there, you have a unique perspective on what is happening there that I would like to hear more about. |
