You never "had" to get transcripts from Excelsior. They always offered their free transcript service, they just highly recommended their partner college(Excelsior) transcript.

I didn't say that they do.  But many schools will ONLY take credit from the original provider (actually, most schools).  I've not heard of many people here having success getting OD credit from the EC transcript, but I know of LOTS of people that have had success at multiple schools getting it directly from OD.
