This is hard to answer because I don't know your current background with computers, your skill level, your enjoyment of tech and digging in to it all. If you're not already a bit fascinated by it all and a bit of a geek for it, it might be a long, boring road.
I wouldn't say drop everything to get a help desk job, but at some point you're going to need some experience under your belt, degree or no degree.

I give you props, worked as a line cook briefly and it can be stressful. Anyway I know that Resort, its pretty nice, four stars I believe. Yea Sleeping Bear Dunes near Traverse city are amazing as well, pretty much that whole corner of the state around the Leelanau Peninsula is beautiful and can be a lot of fun. By the way its funny you mentioned "not running into Kid Rock," my dad years back actually did lol. He was at a car show in St. Ignace Michigan, randomly ended up talking to him there, he didnt really know who he was though(doesnt listen to his music). Apparently Kid Rock is really into classic cars.
