I have run the numbers for my 17 year old son and no matter how we go about it, WGU is a better value financially than the big 3. Are there other downsides I'm not taking into account? Or is the main issue that WGU doesn't allow you to transfer more than 90 or so credits into their bachelors program?

WGU is a good deal if you can finish in one term. It's an OK deal if you can finish in two. After that, it starts getting expensive. And there was no way I was going to be able to finish in one term. There were other factors (like less flexibility), but cost was why I crossed WGU off my list.

Put in a really simple answer I think WGU isn't considered at the same status as the big three because transfer credit is caped at the same amount as most schools. The state school I originally planned on attending after CC took 90 credits. A lot of 4year schools take 90 credits. Then they have there 30 credit minimum residency requirements. Speaking for TESU being able to not take a single class from the school itself and just paying the 2k residency waiver is well worth the money. My original plan would have me at about 41credits right now instead of the 76 I have earned. I am hoping to add 24 credits in the next 45 or so days, leaving me with just 2 TECEPS, A CLEP exam, and a few courses I am taking at Community Colleges. (I wanted more "Butt in Seat" Accounting courses). I am now hoping to be done in May/June with my Bachelors. Original plan I would be completing my Associates at the end of Summer 17' semester Sad so glad I found this forum when I did and for Study.com's scholarship. Saved me a lot of money and time!

I'd be claiming it for the 2017 tax year if we're eligible after figuring out this year's income - so who knows.
