That's a winning plan. Thanks for posting the FEMA guide. For those who look closely, there are several courses that you must combine for 1 cr. FCC accepts many of those singly. In his original TESC list, he earned 9, but by the FCC list he's at 10. ![]() Does anyone know which FEMA courses Charter Oak accepts? - rebel100 - 06-07-2013 Here is my roughed out plan for an AS in Emergency Management at COSC. This is not vetted by COSC, there may be subtle requirements I missed, but it should essentially work as detailed below. It's well under $2000.00 Total....closer to $1500.00 depending on what you might already have. There are many licenses that might work instead of FEMA, have to review that on a case by case bases. General Education requirements. (6)English Comp 1,2 College Comp CLEP (satisfies both, 6 credits) OR Straighterline English Comp 1 (3 credits) and Technical Writing DSST (3 credits) (3)Oral Communications Speech, DSST (3 credits) (3)Literature/Fine Arts Analyzing and Interpreting Literature CLEP (6 credits) (3)Math ALEKS College Algebra (3) OR CLEP College Math (6) OR CLEP College Algebra (3) OR Straighterline College math (3) (3)Ethics Saylor Organization Business Ethics (3 credits) (4-6)Natural Science Biology or Chemistry CLEP (6 each) OR Straighterline Science Course with Lab (4) OR DSST Geology (3) with DSST Astronomy (3) (3)US History or US Gov. Any US History/Government DSST or CLEP (3) Behavioral Science Global Studies Non-US History All three of these requirements are satisfied by the single exam DSST Human Cultural Geography (3) The above completed would = 31-34 credits (assuming you took the 6 credit A&I Literature and on which Science route you take) This completes the Gen eds required for Associates and Bachelors Degree’s at Charter Oak. Note that speech can be waived if you've ever taught a course, or can demonstrate proficiency. You now need 24-29 elective credits. These can come entirely from FEMA IS courses, or through police/aviation/trade credit, or through a combination of those types of credit. In general Charter Oak follows the Frederick CC recommendation on awarding credit…so anything marked “college credit” on the FEMA IS Website should suffice . Emergency Management Institute | Independent Study (IS) - Course List (Note that Thomas Edison is a bit more restrictive on which FEMA they accept…but that doesn’t matter at all if your choosing Charter Oak in the end). So you can bang out all the Gen Eds in 3-5 Exams plus 1-3 Straighterline courses plus one free ethics course from Saylor and the ALEKS course (if you didn’t choose another Math option) All the FEMA are FREE, Self paced, and they really are quick to finish once you get into it. This completed you would need to apply to COSC, take a single class called “cornerstone” and pay the graduation fee…then you would be the proud holder of an AS degree You would also be halfway to a Bachelors degree your Bachelors will entail approximately 30 credits (or 10 classes/CLEP/DSST exams) at the Upper Level within one or two specific fields, and an additional 30 credits in what should be free electives…in other words in any easy to acquire college credits like added FEMA/vocational credit, easy exams, classes, etc… Does anyone know which FEMA courses Charter Oak accepts? - cookderosa - 06-07-2013 This is terrific, I'm printing as I type this! COSC is looking like a better option for me. However, I did have a question about the speech being waived. How would this work? what proof would I need? I was a technical continuing-ed instructor at the local CC teaching web design, Intro the the internet, and computers. I no longer have any official paper work, it was about 5 years ago. I waived my speech requirement with just a couple of letters from people who had witnessed me speaking in public (as a supervisor at work, in my case). There's a waiver form you have to fill out. Then you return the form and supporting documentation to your adviser. Your adviser submits the waiver request to the Provost who decides whether or not to grant a waiver. I can get the letters from work and a previous employer who witnessed my public speaking. I'll make a note to get the form when ready. Thank you. Does anyone know which FEMA courses Charter Oak accepts? - clep3705 - 04-11-2014 I'm confused after reading the previous posts. Will the FEMA credits cost $77/hour or not? What is the least possible cost to get the FEMA courses on an FCC transcript? Will COSC still accept the FEMA credits? Does anyone know which FEMA courses Charter Oak accepts? - rebel100 - 04-11-2014 Charter Oak takes them free of charge direct from FEMA......but they use the Frederick CC review in selecting which courses to accept. Do the courses and request your FEMA transcript be sent straight to COSC. No one knows if COSC has any plans to change this process, Does anyone know which FEMA courses Charter Oak accepts? - topdog98 - 04-11-2014 I can confirm what rebel said. Last week I had 15 FEMA credits accepted by COSC. They were applied as free electives. These came directly from FEMA, and there was no cost. |
