TheCommuter Wrote:My biggest drawback to studying is the fact that I am now working less hours than a few months ago. Since I am paid an hourly wage, less hours equals less money.

From July 2010 until February 2011 I worked two jobs. Both jobs consisted of 12-hour night shifts from 6pm to 6:30am as a floor nurse at two different healthcare facilities. I worked a minimum of 60 hours per week, and sometimes I would accumulate 84+ hours per week when I'd work seven of these 12-hour shifts in a row. Since I am single with no kids, a small mortgage, no car payments, and only a small amount of student loan debt, I was able to save a nice amount of money in those seven months of working two jobs.

However, I decided that working all those hours would be unhealthy in the long run, so I resigned from one job. I have less cash flow, but I am enjoying my days off and I now have plenty of free time to study and pursue my education.
:iagree: I have a very similar setup. I work at a nursery 60-72 hours a week in the spring, and study time has definitely lessened the amount I make during the rest of the year. Incidentally, I also will be cutting back on the number of hours I work (next year I'm going to look for a new job). This is my third year working at this job, and I've decided it will be my last year on the overtime grind. I just can't do it anymore.

I wish I were paid for overtime Smile
I'm exempt from it. Sometimes you get burnt out from overtime but its insult to injury when your paycheck remains static.

P.S: I don't have a job that's why. Haha. Sad

Lol!! I'm not working either, just taking one online course (Advanced Accounting I) and working on my CLEPs/ DSSTs, that way if I get a job I won't be overwhelmed with my school work, but I can still get a lot of classes done while I'm not working.

I workout almost everyday too, but just for an hour, my studying goes so much better and I feel more alert than when I don't exercise. I study better on an almost empty stomach or just enough food to not be hungry, than if I'm stuffed. Also, my husband gave me a strange tip...he said alcohol will help you study (of course I thought he was nuts!). But I took a shot of Bacardi and OMG my concentration was better it was really odd! Of course I don't do it all the time, but every now and then if I'm studying on a Friday or Saturday I'll have a drink or too...if anyone tries it let me know how it worksSmile)

Lol... I do agree with this study tip unless I'm doing something math or finance related, then I require 100% sobriety. Ha ha.. I'm sure the glass of wine or two that I imbibe while studying has also contributed to the small weight gain.

Sounds like you're a lot more muscular than I am :p I don't do a lot of weight-lifting in my workouts.. mostly lots of cardio like running and elliptical machine. Though I am trying to build up the arm muscles..

@burbuja0512. If your weight have stayed pretty steady, besides the extra 5-8 pounds, then I wouldn't worry about it. Most likely when you become more active, you'll easily lose those extra pounds. If you continue to gain, then you might want to try scheduling a workout. I recommend scheduling because it will make you more consistent and actually follow through and do it.

I'm starting to scare myself with all of this advice. lol Maybe I should follow it and try to beef myself up. haha

Ok back on topic. My biggest drawback to studying is the amount of time I have to spend on inside reading, computer work, writing (ughhhh) etc. I love learning and doing all of these things, but not for extended periods of time. I just think of this studying time as a mental workout and try to make time for a physical workout. There is little consistency in my workouts, but I'm working on that.

BTW Just thought I'd say that I changed my forum name this last week. I took my name out of it. I think the new one is better anyway.

I lost muscle for sure by studying. Its a problem. I will have to determine how to keep hitting the weights, getting enough sleep, supplementing, eating lean red meat etc to keep the mass.
My best friend is an amateur bodybuilder so I have to try and keep up Smile
