purpleteen Wrote:I had a different situation where the person told it to my face...I was applying for a summer job this past summer and I've been working there for the past 2 summers. The director of the camp was very pleased with the way I worked and that the campers liked me... However, when I was applying this past summer she told me she can't accept me back. When I asked why, she told me that there were fewer campers applying this year because the parents didn't want counselors that were slightly darker than white...I was enraged when I heard this because this was pure racism...and it got me more upset that she didn't mind telling it to me in my face. I do not consider myself dark skin (you can see my pic on my profile lol) ...I have a light brown color that makes me look slightly tanned...I felt what she did was completely wrong...I know I could have gone to court...but I didn't wanna make an issue out of it so I left and decided to start college right after high school instead of working...so I had no summer break.
That is just ludicrous! You totally could have followed the American Way and sued Wink

Quote:White people really don't like people like me being mixed.

Another stereotype.

How can you use Mexican soap operas and asian beauty contests to complain about the race situation in America? It sounds as if you are self concious about your own skin tone and want to blame society for MAKING you self concious.

Maybe those folks you are whining about were intersted when you mentioned you were half Filipina. They are already white, they know about white culture - that is why they don't feel the need to talk about that part, maybe they were curious if you could teach them something about a culture that they were unfamiliar with. So white people are bigots when they don't care for other cultures, but rude when they show interest in other cultures? Are white people supposed to be culturally sensitive or not?

Yep. Double standard in America. People always say "I'm Mexican-American" or "I'm Latina" or "I'm Asian" attempting to show how they're "different" an isolate themselves from the group... but then get offended when you're the one to mention race.

People need to drop the hyphens and just be "American" and then maybe all this racial crap will stop.

All I know about this subject is when I nursed during Viet Nam, any soldier who was injured bled the same color. It didn't matter what color his skin tone was. It didn't matter to me then and it doesn't matter to me now. I DON'T CARE IF SOMEONE IS STUPID ENOUGH TO COMMENT ON MY ETHIC BACKGROUND, SKIN COLOR OR ATTITUDE. I know who I am, what I care about and that others, of any creed, sex or race, are also good people, with the same hurts and goals that I have. LOVE YOUR DIFFERENCE, YOU are a beautiful person, in and out, and those who don't appreciate that are the one's who are losing out.

Peace, an old sister from the sixties.

So let me get this straight, You're not Hispanic?
I never knew you were half Asian. I thought you were "kinda" (I learned that type of grammar by testing out) like me. A little Hispanic descent but "All American".

as a white person living in asia, i can't help but comment. There was a funny joke on Chappelle's Show, if you guys remember, way back.

"the most racist people in the world are asians, when they talk about OTHER asians!"

I never understood that quote so well until I came here. A lot of us in western countries think of asia as one big place, but in fact it's a ridiculously diverse place full of people who think/live differently and (just like in our home countries) are pretty damn racist towards each other.

The message I'm trying to give is that a LOT of people are racist, quite often the ones you don't expect. You often just gotta disregard it, and understand that their views are likely the result of ignorance or a personal insecurity.

Yeah I guess there's a line that's hard to define. At some point people stop poking fun and start feeling superior to or genuinely hate another group, and this can be dangerous. At the same time I couldnt be a bigger first amendment fan, so it's hard to deal with this.

I saw the vid and it didn't move me at all.

I'm in the south and this type of mindset is pretty typical among females who have never experianced the world outside of a trailer park.
