a little WGU MBA review.... - sanantone - 11-15-2013

I think UoP attracts a lot of people who don't know much about colleges' reputations in general. I've had security officers tell me with a hint of pride that they are attending UoP. Then, they see the look of horror in my face and I go into my whole spiel about how there are better colleges that charge much less. My theory is that they see one of UoP's advertisements and think it's one of the few colleges that offers online courses or flexible scheduling for ground courses.

I'm sure your right, but you reinforce my opinion that someone who will readily commit 10's of thousands of dollars to a UofP degree can't be trusted to make good decisions. I wouldn't buy a car without shopping for a deal and coming to some rudimentary understanding of marketplace offerings. If they aren't bright enough to avoid the situation I don't want them around, it proves they make bad choices.

As i mentioned though, maybe this person will prove an exception to the rule. So far so good.

Received this a few minutes ago reference Decision Analyses "Overall comments: The submission provides a complete and logical discussion of Shuzworld's decision analyses. Nice job explaining that CPM is a precedence model that must have its steps executed in the appropriate sequence. Keep up the great work!"

So Decision is officially done! Only two courses left and I'm an MBA. By all accounts the hardest work is behind me, there is still a lot to do, but no Decision Analyses, Finance, or Supply Chain modelling to derail the whole program. I'm pretty happy with this. I worked on Strategic today and have a good bit of the first of three tasks done. Capstone meeting is tomorrow night and my little group of three is anxious to tilt against the final simulation. Theoretically I could be completely finished by Dec. 31, though I have through February to complete...either way I'm walking for graduation on February 8th!

Interesting things are afoot in the career advancement area for me as well. I have chronicled the sad affair with my immediate supervisors cancer struggle, I wish he hadn't gone out that way. But his position has opened up and I applied for it, all indicators are that I am the candidate to beat. We'll see how that turns out. Looks like two separate panel interviews then a discussion on compensation (I'm not willing to take it unless the pay increase is substantial). On top of that another interesting conversation took place Friday.

I have been helping a Dept. Director work on their MBA over the last few months. We have become friendly and he has been exposed to my MBA work as a result of the interaction. He brought me outside to share that he has a managers role opening up on the supply side and asked if I wanted it. It is significantly more money (about double my current meager salary)...good stuff indeed. And so much for the need to have a big school for networking, I'm working that out and playing the advantages of WGU and online education quite nicely...and remember the company is essentially picking up the full tab for this degree.

On that note, I have to remember to submit Decision for company reimbursement tomorrow, should have a nice check available just in time for Black Friday deals! It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Smile

I hope this thread helps lead other to WGU or away from it. I just want people to be able to make a good informed decisions. I'm really happy with the program overall, it was right for me.

Thank You rebel for starting and keeping this thread alive! This is a very big deal for folks like me. After being in the field health care for over 20 years I'm going for my MBA. now accepted at WGU. Dang, I wish that I've bumped into his thread a bit earlier for the great info, and possibly $65 waiver. But...it's done now. I was really debating myself (LOL) over WGU vs Amberton or A&M Texas, or UT program or something that basically has more name recognition, and is not completely cost-prohibitive. Now that you've almost done w/ WGU MBA what kind of feed back do you get from folks (who matter) at your work, or may be outside of you work field? I've heard nothing but great things about WGU, provided students really follow through on what they've signed up for. But doe WGU give you any connections, which all of these expensive programs are known for. Not that it will matter to me much, as long as I remain employed God willing. In retrospect, given the choice, time it takes to colmplete MBA and the cost factor....would you do this program at WGU or you woul have gone w/ some other place?

Thank You very much.

Hmmm, interesting questions....

If I were 23 instead of 43 I would skip WGU and opt for the cheapest big name school that would accept me, likely that would mean whatever State school held sway in my region. In my case the University of Florida has both one and two year options at around the 20K mark, double WGU but I think the 10K in name recognition could pay off for someone with essentially their whole career in front of them. Since I'm 43 not 23, WGU made a lot more sense for me and I feel fortunate to be in the program. I'm still meeting folks and networking. The MBA pursuit has already led to hints of advanced job offers and new opportunities...I just need to get it finished up and try to reap the rewards! Smile My work in particular has been stellar in both their assistance with my MBA (they paid for about 95% of it), and in the reception to the new credential. I really believe that if I finish in February that by the summer I will be in a better place, in part due to the MBA (actually I hope this pays off before the end of the year, but I don't want to start counting chickens just yet). The hospital I work for sees the WGU MBA as completely on par with any other regionally accredited MBA. The C-Suite here has sheepskin from a diverse and often obscure collection of schools so WGU doesn't stick out at all. The CEO went to Xavier (I've heard of it, but its not super well known), The CNO went to St Catherine's for some masters degree, My own Administrator has an MBA from some Catholic school in Miami...he got it for free when he worked for the associated hospital down there. Point is WGU isn't a disadvantage and it was essentially free for me...so it was without a doubt a good choice.

I'm severely disappointed in WGU's career services. It amounts to some personality quizzes and a hot link to indeed.com ... nearly worthless, actually it IS worthless! When you are considering WGU they quickly point to all these great companies like AT&T as having contributed to the formation of the WGU MBA program. They use this association to "sell" you the program...then as I near the finish line all the in house job leads are for year old entry level jobs I don't really need a Bachelors for much less an MBA....WGU should close their career services department and just make students throw together a linked in account as a graduation pre-req, that would be of more use. I HAVE found some good connections through the Facebook pages, fellow students toughing it out just like me. Perhaps one of them will lead to something one day only time will tell. Many of my fellow students seem to be folks like me who for whatever reason haven't found a lot of career success despite their apparent competence. WGU's price point makes it an attractive option for those that think an MBA will finally be their ticket out of career obscurity...I hope it works, I think with a little hard work it can help.

Time, effort, money considered WGU would still be my pick hands down. But, if I suddenly came into a small inheritance and could afford to take 1-2 years off for studies? In that case I would opt for another school, the one with the most popular football team or the most ivy covered wall I could weasel into. I might one day augment my MBA with a grad cert like this Rinker School - Distance Education - Emergency Services / Disaster Management or this Strategic Management Certificate | Strategic Management Training at Harvard I think these would be a relatively cheap way to enhance the MBA and make me a bit more marketable...besides I'm such an online education junky! Trick will be getting someone else to pay for it! Smile

Your WGU experience should be worthwhile. My writing ability and depth of management understanding has really increased. I've become the go to guy for writing policy and procedure and routinely get called upon to brief senior staff on events and issues. WGU has helped with that, like most of my education opportunities you can make something of it by applying yourself and soaking up the material, or you can choose to apply the minimal amount of work and short change yourself in the end. But there is an underlying quality and palpable worth to the structure and content of each course.

I do wholeheartedly endorse and recommend WGU...just know what to expect and have a plan for how your going to use it.

Thank You rebel100 again! You've just confirmed what I thought. We/re the same age (43). I'm an RN and a licensed acupuncturist by training and have been in the health care industry (both clinical and administrative fields) for ove 20 years now. Darn, I should've applied to WGU around the time you did. I can only imagine how great it is for your virtual classmates to have you around ( in the cyber space LOL). I appreaciate your thread and all of these updates. I'm also hoping to cover most of the tuition cost via my employer reimbursement program, provided i stay on the "pass" side of things Big Grin. Could you please recommend certain things for those "poor" souls like myself, and others reading this thread who are about to embark on this journey? I mean mainly your list of "Do's" and "Don't s" knowing what you know now about WGU MBA.

Thank you.

I would say read the rubric's, they tell you what they want discussed for each task.

Join the Facebook page for every class, read through them paying attention to solutions to common problems...this is all well trod ground.

Watch the video's that most classes have on the MBA Community pages....this is the Course Mentor explaining the task prompt in detail, most are excellent.

Don't pay too much attention to the difficulties of other students. It's easy to throw up your own mental road blocks when we see others expressing trouble. I have found that the courses others found the most difficult weren't really all that hard once I got started. I have also found that the ability of my fellow students ranges from excellent to very poor...some are given to this sort of education and some are not...where others are in the program and in life is no way to gauge your own performance.

Use your resources, send an email to the course or student mentor if you don't understand something. They are being paid based on your success, use that resource.

If your in doubt about a task just submit what you have. You can't really fail any task, the grader will simply send it back with notes to guide your revision....a few times I have sent in what I thought was unfinished work only to receive glowing comments and a pass on the task...there is no penalty for doing this, so do it when you need to.

I'm really enjoying the newer "cohort" model some classes are now offering. This makes WGU more like a traditional school. You actually get lectures, interaction, and guidance specific to the tasks...good stuff take advantage when you can.

Strategic Task 1 was submitted the day before Thanksgiving, came back last night with a pass. I was concerned about this one as I completed the simulation 3 or 4 months ago and had to go back and find the relevant data points but in the end all was well. Two more tasks in this course and its done, be glad when its over. I wish I had applied myself to this sooner so I could just enjoy the Capstone (which I'm also tackling now).

Should have Strategic done by Christmas (I hope) and the simulation for Capstone done by January 1. Then its just a matter of writing up the Capstone before the February graduation! Smile

Work has been CRAZY for the last week+, the hospital is prepping for Joint Commission and I haven't had time to work on school. I did learn that the job I'm applying for has come down to 5 applicants (I'm the only one a class short of a Masters degree Smile ) Everyone keeps saying the position is mine, but sure seems like they are dragging their feet getting this done. The interview process will be two separate board interviews plus an interview with the Administrator....fun times! This better work out, I bought a new shirt and checked the fit on my suit coat. I'm gonna spend some time next week putting together a brag sheet of my accomplishments in the position to go along with my resume. The Admin guy did mention that the only resume that really read as fully prepared for the job was mine. Oddly enough the one other applicant I'm worried about is someone I worked with back in the early 90's. Didn't really care for them then....and sure don't want to work for them now. So if they get the nod instead of me I will be looking for a new job altogether...probably right away. But I don't want to think about that.

In addition to the MBA, I've also been gathering recommendations and commendations from folks in the hospital. It feels ridiculous to ask someone to tell your boss how your doing...but I find it a most reliable way to gather recommendations. Gathered a record of an important win this way yesterday (handling of a big negative incident).

I also had to do something most unsavory yesterday...had to terminate a long time employee. My first time terming someone for a job that mattered and I knew the subject relied upon the job to live. Really sucked and I probably waited too long trying to correct behaviors before making the tough choice to let them go. I hate that it happened in early December...but I've been giving them chances to correct the behavior for months and they just went too far yesterday. Still makes me feel like the grinch though.

I will keep you posted as things develop. My Capstone team has our first review next Tuesday....more to come then.

Best,
Reb

Someone PM'ed me about how courses are structured, here is my response:

"Once your in the program you select with your student adviser which courses to add to your course of study for the semester. You can work ahead in other courses, but only submit tasks in the courses that have been added to your course of study. All tasks are written, there are no exams, no proctors, no finals. If you submit a task and don't pass they kick it back to you fro revision. You revise the sections they specify till you get a passing score. Its almost impossible to flunk out, though academically challenged folks may have a lot of revisions.

You usually have three courses added to your course of study at the start of a 6 month semester. As you complete them you can add additional courses at no additional cost. There are folks out there who whip through all 33 credits in 6 months. A WGU MBA is possible in one 6 month semester for roughly $3250.00, though 12-18 months (2-3 semesters) is much more doable. "
