Great news story! There really should be much more of this reality news spread out to people who are considering taking out all of these college loans. Some sort of class is in order when people are still in high school showing just how much this costs. I also think many parents just borrow without thinking about what the actual cost will be. I have spoken to many people that just have completely no idea what the payments were going to be. Said too think that people are just so in the moment to get it done that they don't ask. Students and parents alike. So many people just buy into the whole education process that they are just so ill prepared to actually reality of it. I have friends that just take out all these plus loans and leaf loans and then something goes wrong in there lives and bingo they just can't pay it.
People in a whole just have to become more aware and educated on this whole process.

A couple more recent articles regarding the cost of a degree:

My niece is headed off to college, and her final choice was dictated partially on her preferences but mostly on which of her accepting schools could offer the most financial aid. Even then, with plans for a journalism degree, she's going to be heavily in debt for a degree that puts her in a low-paying field.
More public universities need to make their programs more convenient for adult learners. Some offer plenty of opportunities to pursue degrees online, but others are still quite limited in what majors are available. And how widely publicized are these opportunities? I think fewer working adults would turn to the overpriced for-profit schools if they were aware that they could get a BSBA for 1/2 the cost at their state university's online or evening/weekend division. But nope, they see the TV commercials for DeVry and ITT, and think that's their best - or only - option.

Ahhh....one of my favorite topics. That article doesn't go into it, but with more digging you'll find that the highest student loan default rate in the country is among culinary school graduates! Up and close to 13% of new culinary grads will default. I wonder if it's because paying $100K to be trained as a buck-over-minimum wage-seemed more glamorous on the Food Network than behind the line? (rhetorical- the answer is "yes")

Can anyone provide articles or information on which degrees are most likely to give the best paychecks?
or...How many of the B.S. degrees don't pay enough and people need to go on to get an M.S. in their chosen field?
or...information or statistics on which degrees are more likely to result in immediate employment after completion?
Just curious if that information is out there.
At the technical center I work at there has been some discussion lately as some persons with degrees and masters are returning to become nurses, as their jobs have gone overseas. One in particular comes to mind, engineers. A man came to register and stated that their jobs can now be done overseas on computers. I'm sure this has to do with his particular specialty but wondering what information is really out there for people to review.

Can't find any hard stats on that yet, but I would think that certain majors are highly employable straight out of the BS program - accounting, economics, applied mathematics, computer science, and the various engineering majors. By computer science I mean the hardcore stuff like systems architecture. Note that all of these majors require heavy mathematical and analytical skills.
To some extent, jobs in these fields can be outsourced, especially the lower-level stuff. The only jobs that really cannot be outsourced are hands-on, like anything involving direct patient care (physicians, nurses, allied health) or other physically-oriented work. If you want permanent job security and high pay, get a BSLS and a plumbing apprenticeship.
