question on designing UMPI BABA degree template

(07-16-2022, 10:40 PM)bjcheung77 Wrote: Basically... Applications are free, I would apply and get an evaluation on what course credits he has, especially since the application deadline is August 9th.  While waiting, take courses from Sophia.org that you know will go into his plan and doesn't duplicate the names of the courses he has already taken. He can take the courses before starting the session, or even delay to the next session, the main goal is "knowing" what goes where....

Essentially... When you have the evaluation, you'll know where you stand and what courses are remaining, it's just 40 courses, if you create a template using the wiki or their requirements, some courses duplicate and can go up to 50+ course requirements.  Just like COSC, there are multiple requirements which each course may fit, in the end, you're not double dipping, you still need to take the 40 courses to finish off the degree.

@bjcheung77

Thank you for the advice. For UMPI, after reading on the board, it looks like the advice was for my son to wait to apply until he gets as close to the 90 cr hour mark as possible and then apply. Is there an advantage to waiting to applying later as opposed to now? It sounds like you are saying that doing it now would be advisable so I just wanted to identify the optimal time for him to apply?/

Thanks,

He's not ready to apply! He hasn't completed anything on Sophia yet. They're just planning out the degree. Once you're accepted at UMPI, you're enrolled pretty quickly. Once you're enrolled, you need permission from your academic advisor to transfer in additional courses. They have been great with accepting courses in the past, but no one knows if this will change. It's also better to focus on one learning platform at a time especially for someone with ADHD. Multiple courses at multiple places can be VERY overwhelming to those with ADHD. He could delay when he starts at UMPI but I don't see the point in applying when he's just starting Sophia.

@ss20ts

I think your advice is pretty sound especially for someone like ADHD who has been frustrated with school. I feel that he has a pretty good UMPI degree template for a BABA with a concentration in Mgmt and Leadership. He is going to try and do as many Sophia and an  ASU BIO100 credits that are listed on the attached degree plan in the next few months before applying to the UMPI program as he prefers little to no proctored exams. If anyone has any final feedback on this plan, I appreciate hearing it.

He registered for Sophia for a 4 month package and will be doing one class at a time. The goal is about 1 class (or so) per week.

Thanks,

Education Seeker

I would work on the Sophia and ASU course and see how he does before applying to UMPI. If he absolutely hates Sophia then UMPI may not be for him. There's no structure and no deadlines so in that way it's very similar to UMPI's YourPace program.

@EducationSeeker - It all depends on the student, some people accidentally or purposely apply first before completing the max transfer of 90 credits, the main benefit to this is they have an option to delay enrollment for next session and have an inside person within the institution to assist.  I just answered this question here: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...e-enrolled

Having said that, there are others on this board that have actually applied and I've mentioned to them to delay their enrollment, which they have.  They're now working on their Sophia.org courses until they reach closer to that 90 credits.  Additionally, if they have questions, they have contacts now instead of asking here, they have more people to help find whatever they're looking for.

If I am understanding you correctly, my son could apply now, be accepted, get an understanding of *exactly* how many classes he would need with an "inside" person at UMPI (Jessica I think), and then defer enrollment until later say in 2022 or early 2023?

He would still be able to get the maximum of 90 credit hours from both his RA credits and more importantly a cheaper option of Sophia if he applied now...correct? I just wanted to make sure that he wouldn't lose out on utilizing Sophia for a cheaper credit source.

Thanks

I have only seen people defer by a session not a full semester. I wouldn't apply until he's completed at least some Sophia courses to see if he even enjoys this and wants to continue.

I highly advise the same thing, get him started with the Sophia.org and finish at least 10-15 of them from your spreadsheet template. When he's closer to the 90, say at 75 or so, he can apply. Right now, it's best to start with Sophia.org to "gauge" how he's doing. This preplanning is great, but you really don't need the extra help just yet internally at the school. Even though UMPI's team is great, they really don't need to help you with anything just yet... Do more Sophia.org first if you've already started.

@bjcheung77 and @ss20ts

According to the breakdown of the category mentioned earlier and my attached degree UMPI BABA Leadership and Mgmt concentration, it looks like I need to take Intro to Ethics which my son can take through Sophia to satisfy the 2A category. However, according to what I believe according to ss20ts, it looks like my son's YSU Psych 1550 General Psychology class may have satisfied the 2B category, so, I am not sure if he would need to take Intro to Ethics or not? Can you please confirm if he needs this class?

Thanks,

Education Seeker

Psychology satisfies both 2A & 2B

Ethics satisfies 2A, 2B, 4C, 5D

As you see, one class can satisfy multiple requirements though you do need 40 credits total.
