I plan on getting a BSLS from Excelsior soon.
I have already taken the College Composition(modular) CLEP, however, I am now aware that this is no longer sufficient for Excelsior's written english requirement. So I was planning on taking advantage of Straigherline's two-for-one on courses and taking English 101 as well as English 102.
My questions are as follows:
Will these courses be sufficient for meeting the written english requirement?
Will I still be allowed to use my College Comp. CLEP credit, or will there be an overlap?
I believe Straighterline's English courses do not contain a proctored component, is that correct?
Thank you

I'm not sure if this is accurate (it probably is), but this chart says that Straighterline's English Comp II course is counted as English Comp I at Excelsior.
EquivalencySearchResults
Excelsior is very picky about what it will accept for Comp II. You can take the ECE to get credit for Comp I and II. The test is also $415. It almost makes me wonder if Excelsior is trying to force students to take the ECE over other non-traditional options. Hmmm.

Hopefully, that is just a misprint on the SL website, but it is worth double-checking with EC and recently enrolled students here.
I have previously read on this forum that SL English I and II met the WER at EC for several members. We would be interested in knowing if this has changed recently.
Also, another forum member confirmed that the English Comp CLEP did not count for any credit, despite what the Student Guide said.
Please keep us updated on this.

I think you may be right. According to their
A Student Guide to Credit by Examination at Excelsior College, the CLEP is worth 6 credits but doesn't fulfill their writing requirement (look under "CLEP Exams" and on p. 24, footnote #4 of linked pdf). That makes me wonder that if 3 of the credits from the CLEP count as English I what do the last 3 count as?
Here are some possibilities for OP to check on with Excelsior for English II:
1. DSST Technical Writing exam. Cost of about $100 which includes proctor fee.
2. Saylor.org
BUS210 Corporate Communication course. Max cost of $50 for proctor fee.
3.
Penn Foster English Composition. Costs about $250-300. This may only count as English I, however, so look and see if there is another course at PF that may work.
4. Propero
English Composition II. Cost is $299 and this appears to have a format like Straighterline.
5.
KCTCS English II. Cost is $484.05, but you won't have to worry about a proctored exam.
6. One of the
community colleges online like Clovis or New Mexico Junior College. Cost varies but should be about $300.
Not sure which of these will work so that's why the OP should check with Excelsior first, but one of them should do the trick and may be cheaper than the EC course or the ECE.

The Technical Writing DSST and English Comp CLEP are not listed as options for the WER in the Student Guide.
Someone on the forum recently suggested the possibility of the TECEP for this requirement. If SL Eng I and II do not work (but I hope they still do!), that could be another option to investigate.

I called EC today and asked if SL's English Comp I and Comp II satisfy Excelsior's Written English Requirement. The person I spoke with told me that these two courses do satisfy the 6 credit WER "at this time" - however, she added that requirements could change in the future, and it is possible that EC will change this policy at a later date.

Excellent update! Thank you!
