change of degree plans
#1
Originally I wanted to gain a four year degree from excelsior. But the requirements for the job I want would qualify me if only a two year degree. So I'm considering knocking out my clep generals and then focusing on the major: law enforcement to finish up my a.a.s. degree. Has anyone knocked out there generals through clep and then took the 2nd year at a community college? The reason why I want to take this path is it will get me in my career faster and my work will pay for my community college. I went to the college board site and the college I want to attend is listed as accepting clep credits. All I needs is 30-34 general credits before I could finish up the degree taking my major which is 29 credits.

Is there a reason you have to attend the school you're referring to? I do believe Excelsior has 2 year degree programs as well, better yet, they do not limit the number of CLEP, Dantes, and ECE tests you can take. I believe you can test out of your entire degree, saving you a lot of time and money. Just a thought...Lee

That would be a great idea, if my work paid for testing out of credits. What they will reimburse me for is a local community college. The 2yr degree I want law enforcement cannot be fully tested out of anyways.

OK, it was worth a shot. I personnaly would fund it myself if it kept me from sitting in a classroom. Does your employer fund the price of books as well? I know the military doesn't. It seems this is often overlooked as a school expense; the cost of a book is often more than a CLEP/Dantes test. It sounds as though you have a plan though, good luck in attaining your goals. Lee

I work for Bestbuy Distribution, and they are great at taking care of all the costs. I'd dread sitting in class to for a year if it was just taking the generals, that's why I think CLEP is great, and hopefully I'll be able to clep out of my generals by the end of the year. Then when I enroll in community college I'll be able to sit in class and focus on something that actually interests me. So far IC has been great for helping me pass intro to sociology and psychology. Next up is biology, this will be a tough exam, but I'm going to studying with IC and REA and hopefully pass the first time around.

That's what I'm doing. I have an A.A.S in a non-related subject than what I am getting my 4 yr degree in. The college I am attending will accept 64 of my community college credits (which my work reimbursed me for) and up to 30 credits for Clep/Dantes in electives if I need them. So, now all I have to do is sit for the core classes in my degree. I go one night a week for 70 weeks and I'll my B.S.

I love that there are so many options available now. Good luck with whatever you choose.
