anyone get a scholarship?

We don't talk too much about scholarships, but my 20-year-old has 2 COSC courses to pay for (Cornerstone/Capstone) which will cost us about 3 grand. I'm collecting scholarships for him to apply for - and am hoping we won't have to write a check at all. But, I'm curious if anyone here has received a scholarship and if so, care to share about it?

I didn't get a scholarship but did get a nice Pell Grant from TESU this semester. I normally don't qualify for scholarships or grants but I retired in Jan 2018 so my kids would start qualifying for scholarships and Pell Grants. My income was killing my children's chances of getting anything at all. So until they are 24 or are in grad school I will keep my income down and go to school myself full time. I have applied to a lot of scholarships and may get some next semester.

I haven't tried it yet, although we plan to. Both my son's school and my daughter's advertise scholarships on their websites. Most are local. So my best (and only) advice is to log onto your local HS (or a bunch of them) and see what they say.

Here are some examples from an email I received today from my daughter's school (yes, I know these ones are for high schoolers, but there are others I've seen that aren't; plus the same organizations may have multiple scholarships, one for HS and one for college kids) :

High School Essay Contest: A $150 to $2,000 scholarship for those in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade is now posted in the library. The San Diego Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution Society, San Diego Chapter will award one student a $150 prize, with the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution offering up to $2,000. The application is open to high school students who are interested in writing a 800-1200 word essay on the topics of the American Revolution, Declaration of Independence, or the framing of the U.S. Constitution. The essay must be submitted by December 31.

Burger King McLamore Scholarship- These $1,000 to $50,000 scholarships are intended for any students with a 2.5 GPA or higher that are planning to attend college or a post-secondary vocational/technical school. Students are selected based on their grade point average (GPA), work experience, extracurricular activities, and community service. Applications are due on Dec. 15 or whenever 50,000 applications have been processed.

CAEOP Scholarship- A $1,000 scholarship for graduating seniors is now posted on the bulletin board in the library. The California Association of Education Office Professionals (CAEOP) is awarding scholarships to graduating seniors with financial need intending to pursue a major and career in the fields of business or education. The application is due on Dec. 17 and requires an essay and 3 letters of recommendation.

Here are some examples from my son's high school website:

Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA)................$2,000
One or more scholarships of up to $2,000 per year, renewable annually for a maximum award of
$8,000 over four years are available. Available to San Diego County students majoring in
science, math or engineering curriculum at 4-year, degree granting universities anywhere in the
United States.

Italian Catholic Federation .........................................................................................$400
Awarded to Catholic student of Italian ancestry who demonstrates financial need and has a GPA
of 3.2 or better.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Educational Grant……………………………......$500 - $3,500
The MLKCCSD established the Visual & Performing Arts Educational Grants to support
graduating high school seniors who will be majoring in the areas of visual and performing arts.

Veterans Association of North County (VANC)......................................................$500
Scholarship available to a graduating senior preparing to attend an accredited college/university
or trade school. 3.00 GPA, have a relationship with a military veteran

Albert W. and Mildred Hubbard Scholarship applicants should:
• Reside in Escondido, CA or Valley Center, CA at the time of their application
• Be graduating seniors or graduates of a high school in Escondido, CA or Valley Center, CA that have attended such
high school for 4 years, or graduating seniors from a community college in that have lived in Escondido or Valley
Center for the 4-year period prior to graduation
• Plan to enroll full-time (12 units minimum) at an accredited two-year junior or community college in California, or an
accredited four-year college or university in California, in all cases pursuing a bachelor’s degree
• Have a cumulative unweighted GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale
• Have a demonstrated financial need
• Be United States citizens or permanent legal residents
Average number of awards: 7
Average award amount: $3000

I like using fastweb to check if the scholarship qualifications apply to me and then you can set up email alerts for new ones you may qualify for. I have received scholarships for essays and community service as a result but this was while at B&M.
I qualified for a grant from my state but am having some trouble because TESU doesn't follow typical school calendars. And I haven't been able to figure out how grants or scholarships work with the comprehensive tuition yet

Yeah I got some scholarships through the association my dads company was a part of. Also, when I worked a grocery store they had scholarships through the grocers association. Check through you and your husbands workplaces as well as your 20 year olds work place too.

We don't have personal experience with them, but there are a number of scholarships available for those with an amateur radio lcense. The license can be obtained by taking a relatively easy multiple choice test. I bet the scholarships are not too competetive (500-2000$ each).

I applied for the TESU scholarships and also a handful of other scholarships but didn't get any. I didn't try particularly hard on my essays because I wasn't extremely concerned with winning(due to having a GI Bill) but figured it could't hurt.

Renee posts scholarships on her College out of the Box FB page. She says her son earned his degree for free (COSC) by applying for all the little scholarships that need an essay or picture, etc...
