Work Experience VS. MBA?
#1
Previously I was in banking for 8 years but have been out of the workforce for 12 to stay home and raise my family.

I am currently working on my BSBA through COSC and hope to have it finished by the end of the year.

I am fortunate to be able to stay at home to pursue my degree and would be able to stay home to further my education with an MBA.

I would like opinions as to if I should continue to get my MBA or after my BSBA, get a job for experience and work on my MBA.

I am not sure what employers would be looking for. I hear so many stories of people not getting jobs for over qualification, but I adamantly want my MBA.

TIY!!!

If you are able to get a job, I would get one while working on your MBA. They may even provide tution reimbursement.

In my experience employers always value work experience more than education. I am in the IT field though. Banking really likes certifications. I've heard from a few people I know in banking that the Series 7 is more valuable than a degree.
Currently studying for: Still deciding.

I like the idea of earning the MBA while you work. My employer covered nearly the entire cost of my MBA. I've been told repeatedly that a director level position was attainable with a bachelor's.... Anything higher requires a masters.... I'm in healthcare. I have an interview in the morning that would not be possible without my MBA.
MBA, Western Governors University February 2014
BS Charter Oak State College November 2011
AS in EMS August 2010

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

I know there are many entry level positions with the Fed that allow you to use a graduate degree in lieu of experience, but as I said, entry level. I'm not sure what an MBA without recent work experience does for you. Besides, any descent MBA program will want your resume and would like to see steady career progression.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.
