Finding new friends

I just moved out of state ( moved from Columbus, OH to San Antonio, TX) and having an issue meeting new friends. I've had the friends back home longer than I can remember and don't even remember how we met. I've joined a few meetup groups for things that I'm interested in, but in the last 2 months but they haven't had any activities and while the people I work with are enjoyable to work with, they're not whom I would consider going out for drinks with etc. Where do adults meet new friends at???

I've met most of my friends doing...things I do. One of my newest and closest friends is a homeschool mom I met through one of the HS groups I take my son to jump in on field trips; she's one of the only ones that doesn't look down her nose at me for being "one of those working moms" (sorry, we have a nasty habit of wanting to eat once in a while), so we got along on the trips, then just starting doing stuff on weekends, getting our families together and discovered our husbands have a lot in common too, and our kids play nicely. Other friends came from work, but you said that's not an outlet for you. Most of the rest of my friends were met just doing stuff I like to do. I met one of them stuck in an airport, and while it's not something I enjoyed (the stuck in an airport part), we were both headed to the same place and had plenty of time to chat.

Take a painting class, or a martial arts class, or join a running club, or volunteer somewhere, or...anything that interests you. If it interests you, you'll immediately have something in common with the other people there to have something to start up conversations to find other common interests. Rather than focusing on finding a place to find friends, think of something you'd like to spend your time doing, and go do it. Friends will follow.

I've moved a lot over the last few years and one of the best ways I've found to meet new people is through meetup.com. It's a social networking site where you enter in your town or city and then find groups of people who have the same interests as you (sports, photography, sky diving, stamp collecting, checkers, dining out, etc). All these interest groups host "meetups" at local coffees shops, restaurants, etc and you get to meet people with your same interests in a completely safe environment. It's not a dating site and it's not facebook. Take a look and give it a try. Good luck.

A few members of this forum, including myself, live in the San Antonio Metro. I'm not really a people person though.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm not much of a people person myself which is why I find it hard to make friends and neither my partner and I are religious people ruling out churches...

Not all churches are religious, You might find a denomination that isn't like the Universalists. If you are young enough the Jaycees or rotary or toastmasters are all good networking organisations which you may be interested in. Zig Ziglar used to say to make a friend be a friend, volunteer at the food pantry, Check out the old Lutheran church at the German quarter I think they run one. Keep an eye out for all those Military peeps around SA. I'm recently moved to IL from Ireland and have a similar issue here, I like my church but there's 30 people there and other than a few people to go shooting with I don't have so much in common with them other than my denomination which isn't Universalist. I'm a ham radio operator so that is a way I've become part of the community. I haven't used meetup nor had I heard of it but I have considered the Rotary and Toastmasters although I'm too old for Jaycees.
