I have taken both. I took A&I as my first Clep. I used the practice test in one of those big Clep study guide books, and used Wikipedia to look up what I missed. It was the very easiest Clep for me- mainly reading a literature or poetry sample and answering reading comprehension questions about it.

For American Lit, I read the book The Idiots Guide to American Literature, and read through the feedback forum on the topic.

I should also add that English and Literature were my strongest High School subjects (though that was 15 years ago) and that I have been an avid reader all my life.

I would recommend A & I as the easier test.

You may want to use the REA book; I did.

Was the Idiot's Guide helpful for someone who is not as well read? I gave up and tried something else, because of so many direct quotes from books!

I would say yes, it is great for anyone prepping for the Am Lit test.

I've taken both and thought the A&I lit was definitely easier than Am Lit.
