What have you done with your degree(s)?
#1
I see so many members here with multiple degrees in their signatures. I see some of you even working on doctorate degrees. How has your education affected your career? How did you translate your education into ROI?

Before I finished my BS in Public Safety Administration from UMGC in May, I had been working as a 911 dispatcher for 13 years for local government. Also in May, I used my shiny new degree (it even had that new degree smell!) to get a job working in corporate security for a F100 company. I am now pursuing an MS in Criminal Justice and plan on an MBA (once the company will start paying for it) after. Since moving to my new job, I have increased my base pay by 30% (plus overtime and bonus).

How have you used your degrees? Are you just a knowledge junkie like me? What kind of ROI have you attained? Share your experience!

As of now, I have not achieved any ROI on my degree. I was very fortunate in starting my career at a small, family owned company, and was able to work from the ground-up into a management position. However, now that I was starting to look outside that company, the lack of a degree was absolutely getting me filtered out of job postings. I was able to get my current job because I was on track to finish my bachelor's, and I fully expect to leverage that experience and the degree over the next 5-10 years.

I am currently deciding if I want to go for a Masters, what Masters I would go for, and when I would do it. I'm going back and forth between an MBA and trying to get into the Georgia Tech OMSA program. I might wait until I have a different job with tuition reimbursement before going any further.

I've been able to advance within my current company a handful of times now which my degrees are indirectly responsible for. But I'll likely continue to look at other degree options because this board has made me weird and I enjoy the process now Big Grin

My ROI is incalculable because my degrees have been virtually free thanks to a employer tuition-reimbursement policy.

I don't know if this counts, but with the completion of first my Associate's degree I was able to get two extra points on my advancement exam( it's a big deal even though it's only two points). My Bachelor's degree helped push me to Number 1 EP which means I'm basically the number one Sailor out of all the Sailors in my ranking and I got Junior Sailor of the Year. Having both degrees give you a leg up on for that. idk of that counts though.

I’m still working on my degree , I’m not sure if I will be able to make more money with my degree or not. The Roi I’m looking for is job satisfaction more than salary to an extent.  I can’t cut my salary in half or anything but If I can make the same and enjoy going to work again then I win. If I make more than That will be icing.  Rolleyes

My master's in ML/AI help me secure a job in the UNDP. The other degree that I am currently studying (BS Statistics and BS Medical Physics) haven't brought anything to me (yet). Maybe in the future. I am more a knowledge junkie person too, so it doesn't really matter will be useful or not.

I was in a small business run by a dysfunctional family. I made $35k a year after 5+ years. The health coverage was eating up $250 (pre tax) of my check. I was just scraping by. Every time I looked at other jobs, they required a degree. I tried to interview for one and the education was a clear sticking point in the interview.
Fed up, I hacked through a degree in about 9 months for less than $6000.
Applied for a job at a large company and got it. Got a 62% pay increase and with better healthcare plan, I'm only out $7 pre tax each paycheck. This company has a 401k with company match. I got more than my investment back in one year just on the 401k company match alone.
Now we own a house and actually get to go on vacations.
