For a student who only needs to take the information literacy and capstone courses, what does it really cost? That's only 4 semester hours. Is the total cost of the degree 4 times the hourly rate? Or is there an additional markup to compensate Excelsior for the fact they weren't making money all along?

I took Information Literacy through Excelsior...before I found this forum. There is no need! You can take it through Penn Foster for $100 or through the new Davar Academy, also for ~$100 plus books.
If you don't take any Excelsior classes, you must pay the $1,095 multi source fee. Then the capstone will be $510/credit hour plus books.
I *think* you would pay:
$50- application fee
$1,095- multi source option
$495- annual student fee
$495- graduation fee
~$1,530- capstone
You can get some discounts if you take 4 Straighterline classes and each UExcel exam can get some $$ off the graduation fee I believe.
From this board I hear they are NOT the cheaper option.

I was decided on Excelsior because I work about 10minutes away from the actual college. However the cost sent me running. I came up with my plan to enroll in my Local CC full time for a year to get Financial Aid, I am using all of my refund to pay the Grad Fee and Residency waiver fee. So with my Pell/TAP grants plus what I took as student loans the only thing coming directly out of my pocket is materials(books, rea guides), and courses like SL. Excelsior here would be the better choice for me because its more known here in NY however its not cost efficient in anyway so they basically priced themselves out of competition.

About $4,175.00; however, if you were to take the information literacy with another source, and join one of their partnerships it could save you a couple hundred dollars.
