One of my children is required to take Western Philosophy this summer in order to graduate with an AA. Unfortunately the local CC is being very unhelpful for a student who works full-time.
So we are looking for a relatively inexpensive RA (CBE?) Western Philosophy course. We've taken a course at Clovis in the past, but with fees & books it's now over $100/cr which isn't in the budget currently.
Anyone have ideas?

Saylor has a Western Political Thought course (PoliSci), it's NCCRS-recommended rather than ACE. There's Intro to Philosophy offered as a UExcel course (comes on a transcript), or SL has it. Not sure if any of those will fit the bill.
But, would it be possible for your child to just purchase the textbook for the actual course, and then do a CBE for it? Many schools offer that as an option, although it's not widely advertised. I would check the catalog to see if they have it at his/her school.

Thank you! I sent an email asking about those options. I don't see that course on the CC's CBE list, but doesn't hurt to check!

Straighterline offers Intro to Philosophy and Excelsior has Intro to Philosophy as a UExcel exam.
Introduction to Philosophy Online Course- Online Intro to Philosophy | StraighterLine
Excelsior College | Introduction to Philosophy
Neither of these is Western Philosophy, but it might not hurt to check with your child's school to see if one of these might be approved.
BA, MA, EdS, MMT, etc.

I haven't received a reply yet, but in the past the school has denied use of SL/UExcel... however maybe they will change their policy!

If the local community college isn't as effective or willing to help, you may want to look at other community colleges in the area as long as it's still in state.
Tuition at those community colleges should be cheaper than taking them from out of state in other areas of the nation. Most have online courses by now.

Yes, good point, and this is in the back of our mind. The concern at this point is how late in the process we are already (scheduled to graduate at the end of summer). This need for an alternative course was sudden and quite unexpected, so that's why we're scrambling at this point.
I received an email from the advisor this morning stating that the VP will make a determination today or tomorrow as to whether we can use SL, so that's hopefully good.
