This is going to my first and only CLEP. I MUST take and pass a western civ 1 or 2 CLEP to graduate.
I have heard the Civ 1 is easier, is this true?
If I'm using the REA study guide, how many solid days/hours of studying is needed? I plan on taking work off and studying from morning to evening, all day, how many of these days is neccesary?
What other guides/videos/resources should I be using along with the REA guide?
And any other tips you can give me would be greatly appreciated, post your scores for the western civs to cheer me up!!!
Thank you!

I recently took W. Civ 1 and I am currently studying for W. Civ 2 I used instantcert and REA. I read the REA guide and did both test about 2 times and really just learned all the answers to the questions. I would say two solid days of uninterrupted study would be sufficent. Mine was spread out over a month. Personally, I think I will do better on W. Civ 2 because I am more knowledgable going into my study of the subject matter. I think I got a 67 on W. Civ 1, I can't remember right now though... anyway, I hope that helps, it sounds like you have it all covered though with the rea guide and instantcert, just get in some committed study and you should be fine.

I recently took western civ I and used the REA guide and practice tests. I really feel that most of the material on my exam was covered by REA. I feel like a learn a lot by reviewing the explanations to the practice tests repeatedly until I know the material.

The REA book was accurate for my test. A few of the questions were even very similiar! However, my brother ended up with about half of his test on Greece/Rome, while I had a lot of Middle Ages.
Whether Western Civ I or II is harder probably depends on how much study you've done in those time periods. I think the questions in Western Civ. I are more general because of the broadness of the test. How long you study depends on how good you are at memorizing and remembering. I have a friend who took the test for Western Civ. I recently who solely used the REA book for a couple weeks--memorized the test answers and made a 66. I slowly worked through the REA book, used different textbooks and such and took the test after a few months of not very intense study. I made a 58.
Looking through some textbooks or library books to familiarize yourself with the artwork of the cultures may be helpful, but the art will only come up a few times on the test. I really think the REA is most helpful for Western Civ. I. We briefly used the Speilvogel textbook and the Western Tradition online videos, but stopped both of them because they didn't seem that helpful. Knowing the test questions and answers in the study guides generally is more useful to me than reading the content.
Those are just my thoughts...I took the test in December.

I took the western civ 2 clep and passed with a 75. I read the spark chart notes and the REA guide to western civ but truelywhat helped me was watching all the episodes of The Western Tradition by Dr. Eugene Webber of UCLA. He is very interesting when you listen to him and he really goes into detail the feelings and motivations of the times.
When I did my test I realised that probably over 50% of the the test was either over The Western Roman Empire or the East roman Empire. Learn about the Pelloponesian War between Greece, Sparta and Persia. Know your emporers and their ideals. Very few covered ancient western civilization in the mesopotamia and nile regions. The other half consisted mainly of dark/middle age history.
