Public Speaking DSST
#1
Hi all,

I am debating on whether or not I should take the Public Speaking exam. A few questions for anyone who has taken and passed the exam:

  1. Is the exam "hard" meaning it requires weeks of study?
  2. What type of questions are asked during the exam portion?
  3. Is the speech more or less difficult then the exam?
  4. Is the speech portion and exam a combined grade or separate?
  5. Is the speech graded by the computer or a specialist?
  6. Is the grading for DSST the same as CLEP, less or more "harsh"?
I was involved in speech and debate in HS and received several awards so I think I should be fine (depending on the topic) but just wanted to see what everyone has to say.

1) The multiple choice is arguably the easiest DSST/CLEP/Excelsior I've taken (out of 18 I think?)
2) I don't even remember, I downloaded a free textbook from the University of Minnesota open library, read that, made a few flashcards and was fine.
3) The speech is definitely harder, but they are really lenient with the grading (I was about 90% sure I failed, but I passed! Smile)
4) Separate grades, you must pass both portions to receive credit.
5) Speech is graded by instructors at partnering colleges I believe.
6) DSST grades on more of a curve, difficult tests require fewer correct answers. Overall though, it's not really that different.

Like that other person said, just go for it! Rehearse a couple of practice speeches and read that book from UMN (It's a quicky). You have speech experience, you'll do fine!
