While ASU is not ranked as high as UT-Austin, it does have one of the largest international student populations. It is strange that tens of thousands of international students have found these big state universities, but some Americans who proclaim to be interested in higher education have never heard of them. I would bet the people participating in this thread are not representative of the general population. The general population may not have heard about Study.com, which is to be expected, but they've heard the names of major state universities. You pretty much have to not watch, read, or listen to the news your entire life to not have heard of them.
The funny thing is that Texas A&M and UT-Austin are ranked high in many different fields. UT-Austin is known for its overall academics, not just one field.
There's faaaaaaaaar more to NY than NYC. NYC is a tiny island. The state is HUGE in land area. I live 6 hours away from NYC. I couldn't tell you about 99% of what happens there. Why? No one in Upstate NY gives a rat's behind about NYC. We'd happily give it to Jersey.
Has it occurred to you that your relatives know of the school from you?
I had heard of ASU long before I found this forum because ASU has been advertising on social media for eons.
I've attended several colleges in different states. I doubt anyone outside of those areas would have ever heard of them. I don't give people a hard time because they don't know what they are. At the end of the day, no one cares.
Seems like most people on here actually know more colleges than the general public. Know why many schools have large international student pops? Here's how they do it. They hire recruiters who go to these countries and recruit the students. Much like pro sports. They're drafted essentially. Why? Foreign students pay cash. No financial aid.
I've never mentioned UT-Austin to those family members. LOL. I had no reason to because I never attended. I just asked them over social media if they've heard of the school.
The members of this forum are aware of a lot of obscure competency-based programs and schools that cater to adult learners, which makes it weirder to not have heard of flagship universities that are known nationally.
The people who don't know anything are usually in no position of importance, so their lack of knowledge is irrelevant to job seekers and prospective students.

Anyway, Gabby Thomas is AMAZING!!! I think that if a news source is actually doing a story that includes identifying/naming a college or university, they should get the story straight. No excuses. From everything I have heard about Gabby Thomas, not only is she academically gifted, an incredible athlete with an amazing work ethic, she is also well-known as a very supportive and caring person.

Good point. I think most of us focused more on the OPs comparison to other schools rather than the reporter’s responsibility to know the details of the subject matter they were reporting.

I don't know who she is. Never heard of her until this thread. I don't follow sports. All i know about the Olympics is a bit about Simone and that the USA won the most gold medals and the most overall medals.....only know that because I saw a headline on People this morning. What sport is Gabby in?

She can run like the wind! Her race is the 200-meter. But that is just a part of her story.

A few people on this forum like to nitpick over everything and start arguments over nothing. I agree. A reporter should know something as basic as a school name to report accurately. If you're a sports reporter, you should definitely be familiar with the top sports universities. I heard someone call Gabby Thomas "Gabby Douglas," who was a gymnast.
Gabby Thomas is amazing. So far, she appears to be a good role model for young girls. I don't follow sports except for the Olympics every four years. I didn't know who Gabby Thomas was until the U.S. Olympic trials, but she just went pro not too long ago. Harvard hasn't produced many track and field medalists, so people were kind of shocked that a Harvard grad placed 1st in the 200m trials.
On a related note, these are the universities that have produced the most Olympic medalists before this year's Olympic games.
