WANTED: Bachelors degree, see details. (lol)
#1
I have been a lurker on this site for quite sometime and have decided to post and see what you all think would be a wise choice for me.  I am currently Active Duty Military and am looking to finish a degree.  Now I'm unsure of which route I should take.  I am an Avionics technician (Aviation Electronics). My career goals post military will align with the electronics repair side of things, not necessarily tied to aviation.  So, with that, what would you all recommend as far finishing a degree as quickly as possible for me?  Would the Athabasca be a good option?

TESU has a degree in Electronics Systems Engineering Technology. They accept up to 117 credits out of 120 for a degree. I don't know enough about plans for that degree to help you out. But this might be something you are interested in.

They also have an electrical technology degree.

As active duty military, you can apply for free. So just apply and enter your program as one of those two programs when you apply. They will evaluate your credits and see how close you are to finishing. This could take up to a month. So in the meantime, you could explore other options and take CLEP's and DSST's for free. Even if you don't go to TESU it's free so you have nothing to lose.

If you're thinking Athabasca University, you need to think again, they don't take alternative credit. I would follow Natshar's recommendations. Your best bet is the TESU BS Tech Studies or the BALS, quickly apply to them and you should send in your transcripts to see which degree is closest to completion. I don't suggest anything other than the TESU BS Tech Studies for your courses as the other BS's require specific courses, the Tech Studies will many times take in Lower Level and place them in the required Upper Level field - with the amount of AVI and ELT courses, you may already have the Area of Study completed.

Thanks for the suggestions. If I were to apply to the technical studies program at TESU, how many credits do you think I would end up after transfer?

Not sure. The only way to find out for sure is to apply and be sure to send all your transcripts. TESU is really generous. Probably everything you earned will be accepted as transfer credit, whether or not it counts towards your degree is another story.

I like all your CCAF credits. Big Grin

You may be better doing a technical degree?

Generally, you won't find a more efficient one than the Bachelor's in Liberal Arts (without concentration) degree from Excelsior College.  TESU and COSC will have the same type of degree.

I would apply at TESU, for Aviation Maint Tech, and then you can play with the other ones to see which degree would work the best.  You just go into your online account, and "switch" your degree to Tech Studies or BALS or whatever, and see what you get.

Come back and let us know what you find.

In the meantime, here's a spreadsheet (2 pages) showing the BS in AMT and the BS in TS.  You're probably better off with Tech Studies, since they only require Physics I & II w/labs, while AMT requires Physics I & II w/Labs and Chem w/lab (none of which you have).

Also, I think the main problem is going to be getting UL credits.

So, if you want the fastest/cheapest degree, then you're probably better off with a BALS.

But, really, you need your courses evaluated before you can make any decisions.

Also, just an FYI, as active-duty military, your tuition is $250/cr, but TECEP exams count for residency - so you will want to take the capstone, the cornerstone, and then 4 LL TECEP exams for $75 each.

I'm curious what you mean by efficient?  I'm currently trying to assess which school would be better for this type of degree: TESU or Excelsior.

If you just want to finish a degree(any degree) as fast as possible, then going with a BALS should do the trick. You should be fine getting a job in electronics repair based on your military experience. If you do want a more technical degree then the BS tech studies would probably be your quickest bet. You could get some relatively cheap/quick UL IT/CS courses through the various ACE/NCCRS providers. The hiccups you may run into would be the physics and chemistry labs. There's no alternative approach for physics 2 lab so you would have to take that through a college/university.
