Update Info - EC's Info Literacy
#1
Hi All...

I thought I'd give you all the latest information from Excelsior regarding the Information Literacy requirement. I contacted EC and was told by my adviser that they "may" accept an IL course from another institution - however, the complete syllabus must be submitted in advance, which can take weeks for approval. The only truly accepted IL course is from EC itself, and it is approved and can be started almost immediately after registration...I bit the bullet, signed up and completed the entire course in TWO DAYS - a miracle for a snail like me, but I'm desperately trying to move myself along at a faster pace.

The big downside is the cost....an ASTRONOMICAL $465 for the 1 credit....Ahhhhhhhhhhh, my jaw dropped to the floor when I saw the price:ack:...

Yes, it's official, everyone in my family is receiving a box of toothpicks for Christmas.:p

I always wondered if Excelsior would accept my Information Literacy course from Colorado Technical University. They didn't count it toward the requirement during my preliminary evaluation. I definitely was not going to pay them an enrollment fee for a full evaluation when TESC and COSC do it with the submission of an application. I would raise hell if they didn't accept that course because it was a 4 quarter hour course that was easy, but wasn't as much of a joke as their 1-credit course that can be completed in 2 days.

Great update; thank you!

If cost is the biggest factor, this should mean that LSU and some community college courses may still be acceptable for t his requirement. Hopefully, there are some good options for this.

I took Info Literacy at my state school. EC accepted it during my preliminary evaluation, and denied it during my official.

Oh really? Maybe I missed your post on this problem. Did you go through the process of submitting the syllabus?

I noticed that you just graduated! That is the most important part! Congratulations!!!

I used a class from Hudson Valley Community College to satisfy the info lit requirement at EC. It's an 8 week online course offered twice per semester.

ENGL*115 LIBRARY SKILLS FOR RESEARCH
Description: This course provides an introduction to library research and information literacy. Content will focus on how to create a research strategy for finding, retrieving, using and evaluating information in print and electronic formats including the Internet. Also covered will be many of the academic, legal and ethical issues relating to information. Skills gained can be applied to research papers, projects, professional and personal information needs. Offered Fall, Spring.

The cost is $174.80 for both residents and non-residents. Non-residents are awarded a scholarship for the difference between resident and non-resident tuition provided they are enrolled solely in online courses.

When I enrolled the application for non-matriculated visiting students was free and HVCC also doesn't charge for transcripts. Also HVCC is an eligible non-parent school for an EC financial aid consortium agreement.
