Transfer Credits/Degree Questions-BA Psychology
#1
Hi!
I have a couple questions and would really appreciate if anyone could give me some guidance as this is the most informative place I have found. I have changed my major two times elsewhere and am trying to get my degree in Psychology at one of the Big Three-whichever takes the least amount of time. Ill add the classes I've taken down below. Its taking a long time for the report to come back and I was wondering if anyone could help me out in seeing what they will transfer as?
Also, I've seen a couple people say you do not receive a B.A. in psychology, but just with an emphasis. Is this accurate?
Thanks!

You have so many classes in HRM that you would get through much sooner with a business degree.

Are these credits from a community college or a university, by the way? CC credits can only transfer as 200-level, but university credits sometimes transfer higher.
BA, MA, EdS, MMT, etc.

I agree, take a look at TESC's BSBA, Hospitality Management

Hospitality Management seems to be a very interesting specialty area. You've taken the required course and have more than enough hospitality electives to meet the total 18cr required in the area of study. What I find interesting is there is no mention of upper level credit, just a list of courses. I wonder if they would even consider some of those courses as business electives?

You wouldn't need much to complete this degree plan. Mainly filling the business core section. Eng Comp II and the ethics requirements. Overall, you are in a real good place to earn this degree. Search the forum for information on the pay per credit tuition plan. When planning your degree map, designate 8 TECEP exams $111ea across the degree. ($888+299 graduation fee). See the thread link in my signature.

You should be able to test out or take cheap alternate courses (Straighterline, Penn Foster, etc) for all needed credit.

BA, Psychology. You only have the one lower level psychology course. You will need a minimum 18 upper level PSY credits inlcuding the capstone for the BA. I would start with the BSBA and after, if you are still interested, taka a second bachelor's in PSY. You would need 24 NEW credits, that could be filled by the PSY area of study including the capstone. If I'm not mistaken you would have already completed all other requirements with prior credits and the BSBA.

By using the pay per credit tuition plan, it will make it extremely affordable to earn both degrees. Maybe add on an associates along the way?

Either way good luck!

That's an omission on the part of that web page. The current TESC Catalog describes the same upper level for all BSBAs (page 45 of the print pagination):

TESC Wrote:Area of Study (18 credits)

The area of study is the component of the degree that focuses on the specific business area in an in-depth way. Twelve of the 18 credits must be at the 300-400 level.

This depends entirely on which specific program you'd take at the Big Three. TESC and Excelsior offer majors in psychology…*but if you pursued the Excelsior Liberal Arts option with a depth in psychology, you would "just" have a depth, similar to a minor. COSC offers a concentration in psychology. COSC's concentrations, a minimum of 36 semester hours (and for some programs more) with upper-level and subject-specific requirements, are to my mind the functional equivalent of a major.

Wow, you have lots of good "get a job" sorts of credits! Since you asked about a BA in Psychology, here is an abbreviated version of that from TESC. You would need 66 more credits with 18 upper level. The only class you already have for the major would be Intro to Psych. For this major, you would have quite a number of excess free electives.

Thomas Edison State College Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

III. Free Electives need 27, you have 63

For a BSBA in HRM at TESC, you would still need 57 credits, given what's missing from your Gen Ed and core requirements:

1. English Composition II (ENC-102) 3
2. College Algebra or Quantitative Analysis 3
3. Managerial Communication 3
4. Macroeconomics (ECO-111) 3
5. Microeconomics (ECO-112) 3
6. Statistics (STA-201) 3
7. Responsible Ethical Leadership 3
8. General Education Electives 12
9. Principles of Managerial Accounting 3
10. Principles of Finance 3

12. Business in Society or International Management 3
13. Strategic Management 3
14. Principles of Management 3
15. Organizational Behavior (TESC exam) 3
16. Organizational Theory OR Organizational Development and Change 3

However, I found a degree that will effectively use all the credits you have (see next post).
BA, MA, EdS, MMT, etc.

The degree that makes the most effective use of your credits is a Bachelor of Professional Studies in Business and Management from Excelsior. You would only need 36 more hours for this degree.

I did not look at COSC because their degrees are "BS in General Studies with a Concentration in _____"and that seemed to be a concern for you.

Good luck!

Opps good catch! I usually check the catalog so I apologize for missing that.

If the OP is interesed in the BSBA there may be a workaround (community college to univerity transfer agreement), but I'll wait to see the feedback on the current suggestions.

Were any of the classes from a 4 year college? Southwestern College in Kansas counts any class from a 4 year college or CLEP as upper level with the exception of major classes. Some of the PSYC classes could be clepper or passed with TECEP's and they accept Nationally Accredited credits. The catch is that you would need 30 credits in residency.
