Transcript Review - Help, which of the big 3?
#81
Be warned that if you have a low score going into the proctored final in Managerial Accounting through Straighterline, you WILL NOT PASS most likely. The final is 75 questions, and about 50% of them are the equations. I had a strong A going into the proctored exam but I got a 65% on the final because I just ran out of time. I still easily passed the course but 75 questions in two hours just isn't enough time, so I aced the definitions stuff, but had to guess in the last 20 mins all of the math because there wasn't enough time to do them.

I suggest Straighterline Managerial Accounting because if you have just finished Acct I & II from Straighterline, it isn't that difficult to just keep going and finish up with Managerial Accounting. There is enough time for the tests and mid-term, to get a good score. The final was the only part I found challenging because of the time constraint.

Thanks for your input, I figured as much from reading other members' experience with this course.

What really sucks about SL and this course is that you're not allowed the use of spreadsheets for their exams. Last Spring and Fall, I finished both Financial and Managerial accounting courses at my CC. I did really well in both (got A's), understood the material, and was able to get by the math questions using excel. My CC courses encouraged the use of a spreadsheet and the books showed you how to do it.

As far as SL, it just doesn't make sense to me why they wouldn't allow the use of spreadsheets for these exams. In fact, the book (they require you to use) teaches you how to answer the questions using excel. o_O

Anyways, I've decided not to continue with the course (for now) and will begin to study for the Money & Banking DSST instead.

But to make the right decision, you must have all the options. Make applications to all the Big 3. They're all a little bit quirky in their own way. You cannot find the best path without investigating all paths. I know a lot about many options at the Big 3, but if I were you I would expand my search to WGU. With all your experience WGU has a unique way of looking at your experience whcih could give them the edge, I don't know. Take a chance and spend a few bucks to find out!!! Good Luck and keep us informed, we're here to help!

P.s. Start with BSBA tp all based on your employment and credits to date

Forgive the relative newbie question: Exactly what does application at each of the schools do for you in terms of credit evaluations, vs. enrollment? Will each of the colleges tell you which of their programs will maximize your transfer creds, etc., when you apply? Do they wait until you are enrolled? If it does, then how does it interplay with the different types of evaluations --- credits for exams, credits for existing certifications (PMP in my case, and older Cisco certs)?

I'm working on this right now, and I'm rather confused, esp. with all the credit banking at Excelsior and COSC that seems to be possible. I'd be interested in applying to each if they are going to evaluate all my creds as part of that. Enrolling at each would seem to be expensive...

While on that thought, however, has anyone ever enrolled at more than one of the colleges in question, and completed two different degrees simultaneously? It seems possible...

Your help and thoughts are much appreciated !!

The credit evaluation will tell you which of your transfer credits will be applied to to your selected program and will also tell you what credits you will need to graduate for this program. Since the programs, even in the same degree, differ at each school and each has its own quirks for evaluating your past work, the only way to find out which school is best for you is to apply for the initial evaluation at any of the schools who have degree programs in which you are interested. None of the schools will tell you which of their programs will maximize your transfer credits. But with TESC you can do your own "What-If" analysis by computer once you have your eval there. You can get a one time re-eval for a different scenario at EC if you ask. You might get more help at COSC than the other two. I don't know about the pre-enrollment service at WGU. Also note: None of the schools will give you a pre-enrollment evalutaion based on your experience unless that experience is for license or certifications that they have already pre-evaluated. You will have to check each schools' list to see if you qualify for any of these (TESC has the most extensive list.) and make sure you send in the documentation for these potential credits along with your application. At enrollment you can have more than one "active" degree program so that if you can take a different path as you go, but you cannot earn multiple degrees using the same credits for each degree unless meeting all the multiple degree requirements of your school. And no, you cannot bypass this by being enrolled in more than one school at a time. However, how they would know you were doing this is unknown to me.

Once you see what and how many credits you will need, you can pick your school and enroll within the next 6 months from the date of your application. In the meantime you could get working on needed credits using CBEs ALEKS, Straigherline, etc (Make sure these courses are tranferable to your target school.) so that when you do enroll, you can finish your degree in the most cost effective time frame (usually 1 year, but COSC has even better options)

Once you enroll, you can get help from your school for earning credits from prior learning experience. These will most likey be upper level (UL)credits that you need because it is generally much easier and faster to earn your LL credits by CBE. Although you could try Learning Counts (LC)for generating a portfolio for mutiple LL credits (e.g. Acct I, II, III, IV) prior to enrollment at TESC or EC However not all of these credits may apply to you specific degree, but it's cheap and easy enough to do at LC if you really have the experience.

While the so called "Credit Banking" services sound somewhat appealing, none of them have been reported to have worked in application for acceptance to a school that did not perform the credit banking. This concept might be applicable if you are using it for non-degree purposes such as teacher licensure in some states, but I don't know this for sure.

My own "I'm Done!" Post ..

Reviving the old thread I started when I was trying to figure out a plan ... in order to update that I passed my final test today. I dropped the graduation form to TESC in the mail on my way home from the test center. Below is my BSBA MGMT degree plan which included a mix of Community Colleges, Penn Foster, Aleks, Straighterline, Tesc Class, TECEPs, CLEPs, DSSTs, and 3 FEMA credits. I was lucky to get in under the old degree requirements and I'll soon be graduating from TESC with a 4.0.

Thank you everyone for all your help and guidance along the way!!

I chose TESC for the following reasons:

1) Name

People ask me all the time what school I went to. Excelsior just does not sound as legitimate as Thomas Edison State College.

2) Free FEMA credit transfer

I had a lot of FEMA credits. Did not feel like paying hundreds of dollars to get them transferred.

3) I graduated in PSY. TESC required only one liberal capstone class. The other two asked for a LOT MORE THAN THAT.

I was accepted at the University of Pennsylvania and will start my semester there this fall. So something is telling me that I did it the right way Wink

Good luck!

publis2k4, thanks for posting your final degree plan!

So I've noticed a lot of people doing BSBA at TESC are using Straighterlines Accounting I and Accounting II. However Straighterline also offers Financial Accounting and Managerial accounting. So I'm a little confused, which one do you think I should complete for credit from TESC? Accounting I & II or the specific Managerial & Financial Accounting classes.

This forum is fantastic!
