Tired of Waiting - CLEP Game Plan
#1
I've decided that instead of waiting for Excelsior and TESC to get back with me on evaluations, I would go ahead and start taking CLEP exams. I'm still unsure which degree program I want to take (will depend on transcripts). Since I don't have any business courses on my transcripts, I've decided to go with the following exams (in order):

Principles of Management
Principles of Marketing
Principles of Macroeconomics
Principles of Microeconomics
Introductory Business Law

The reason why I picked these exams in this order is for several reasons:

1. I believe they are all transferable to Excelsior and TESC.
2. They are all covered by IC.
3. They are all subjects I am interested in.
4. Management and Marketing both have alternative ways to be fulfilled incase of failure.
5. With exception of IBL, the order is also based on quantity of people and quality of score that passed the exams with IC and other study materials.
6. CLEP exams are offered daily (locally) where DANTES are offered bi-weekly.

Do you think I have a solid gameplan going into this?

I have an interview with KSC's Space Program on Wednesday, so I have decided to start studying on Thursday. If I'm offered the position, I will need to make a decision on whether I want to go to school part-time or full-time.

Looks like an excellent game plan, many of those courses overlap and can be added to any degree program but fit nicely into a business program in particular.

Hope all goes well at KSC too!!

GOOD LUCK!!

Your plan looks absolutely fine. I had no trouble at all with Marketing or Management and I take Macroeconomics this Wednesday--which is a good deal harder for me than the previous two. Good luck!

BMW,

If at all possible, I would take DSST Principles of Supervision on the same day you take CLEP Principles of Management. It would be a shame to waste the opportunity to earn six credits for three credits worth of study.

If you haven't done so already, go HERE to download a free copy of the Official DSST Study Guide book. It contains a chapter on each of several different DSST exams and includes a chapter on the Principles of Supervision exam. This, along with your prep for CLEP Principles of Management, will be enough to get you a pass.

You might also consider taking DSST "Intro to Business" while you are at it. Study the chapter in the DSST book, and take the mock exams in there too. If you feel confident enough, I would highly recommend you add it to your starting list alongside Management, Marketing, and Supervision. Good solid prep for those three exams, combined with reading the specific chapter in the book, and some common sense, will set you up for a pass on Intro to Business too.

Management + Supervision
Marketing
Intro to Business
Macro
Micro
BL I

Hope that helps,

Thanks for the suggestion. While CLEP testing is flexible, I cannot find a DSST Center within 100 miles that is. I have called 10 testing centers, and have callbacks waiting on 2. Best case scenario is Strayer University in East Orlando will have a flexible testing center that caters to both CLEP and DSST.

If they DO accept flexible DSST and CLEP, would pairing them into seperate testing days be sufficient? (allowing for proper training/preparation).

Testing Day A
1st Management
2nd Supervision

Testing Day B
1st Marketing
2nd Intro to Business

If they are not flexible, my local community college offers both DSST and CLEP, but you can only take 2 tests per month (3rd saturday of the month).

The only other way is if I were to become a civilian employee with Patrick AFB (Unless the KSC job allows civilian access since Cape Canaveral Air Force Station is the East Coast Space Launch Facility). I'll have to check into that, since I know Civilian Employees would receive free testing.

Hey there BMW. I was in the same boat with our local testing center (Singular) and no other options available unless I wanted to fly back to the states for every test.

What I ended up doing was going to the local dean of the college here on base and asking her to allow me to take more than one. I had already taken six or seven CLEP's at the testing center and had passed them all, so she knew I wasn't going to be wasting anyone's time. After a few weeks of taking two a day, they really started to work with me and scheduled multiple days for testing. I'm now known as the "Clep-tomaniac" here on base. Wink

Granted we're a small community here, but it never hurts to ask if policies can be changed. Something you might want to try at your college as well.

I would do just that! You don't have to take two exams on the same day, but I would at least try to arrange it so that you take them close together.

By the time you have completed the above four exams, you will be a pro at it and will be ready to take on the somewhat more challenging macro and micro exams. I personally didn't have any trouble with Intro to BL, but some have said that they struggled a bit.

I hope you are able to find a 'user-friendly' testing center soon.

Looks like Strayer is flexible enough

Monday – Thursday 12:30PM to 7:00PM
Saturday 9:30AM to 11:00AM

This is good because I prefer taking exams in the early afternoon (after a nice lunch).

The manager was very helpful and informative over the phone as well, and willing to accomodate more than one exam per day, and it will save me extra trips (130 miles roundtrip).

I'll be studying soon enough!
