Thomas Edison just announced a new per credit tuition plan. You can get all the details here, along with a nice chart showing how much you will pay depending on how many credits per year you will take. It looks like it could save you a good bit of money if you are doing a degree mostly through testing. It would have saved me $1000.

The fine print reveals that it will cost more and the residency requirement will turn many people away. It's a nice option for those who don't have all the money up front and want to take their time to complete the degree:
"NOTE: Students who select the Per Credit Tuition Plan with the intention of graduating from Thomas Edison State College have academic residency requirements of 12 credits for an associate degree and 24 credits for a bachelor's degree. Residency requirements are met by earning credits via Thomas Edison State College Online (OL), Guided Study (GS) or e-Pack (EP) courses, TECEP exams (TE) or Portfolio Assessment (PA)."
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

I didn't see the chart, but I saw the quoted info last week. I wasn't excited about it, so I didn't post it here. LOL. The residency requirement kills the whole deal. But I'm wondering, if you take 8 TECEPs at $100 each, have you met the 24 credit hour residency requirement? Or, do they charge you the full tuition rate if you're not under the Enrolled Options Plan?

I got an email with this new program and was wondering the same thing too.
Could be worth it if TECEPs are allowed to fulfill the residency requirement.

Does the Portfolio Assessment (PA) consist of CLEP and DSST exams? Could that count for the residency requirement ?

No, the Portfolio Assessment is their new way of completing PLA courses. It is money paid to TESC and doesn't include exam credit from CLEP or DSST.

HOLY SMOKES did you see the per credit tuition!?!?!?!! $476/credit. GULP!
The 24 credit residency is $11,424 before fees.
Enrolled is $3062 per year before fees or tuition at $229/cr.
Comprehensive is $8395 per year before fees, but if you pay $8395 you get to complete 36 credits, but for the same money you could only complete 17 credits under the per credit option.
I think that even people taking JUST THE CAPSTONE will come out significantly ahead choosing the "enrolled option" because you don't have a residency requirement ($11k)

Yeah, I don't quite see any benefits to the per credit enrollment either. Even with Sanantone's suggestion of using $100 TECEPs to meet the residency requirement, I still don't see how this helps. Unless I'm wrong, you have to pay the $11,424 per credit tuition for those 24 credits plus the $800 for the TECEPs.

I think it would be either/or. You either pay $800 for the TECEPs or they charge you for the TECEPs at the full per credit hour rate. My guess is that they are charging you $476 per credit hour for the TECEPs if you're not under the Enrolled Options or Comprehensive Tuition plan. TESC wouldn't want to lose that much money.
As far as the residency requirements, I'm wondering if only the required PLA courses will count toward the residency. TESC would lose quite a bit of money if you could earn around 21 credits for your portfolios for $700 plus the 600 and something dollars for the PLA courses.
