Congrats TESC/TESU students and alumni! :hurray:

I don't think so. In the United States university and college is generally interchangeable. EC is continually seeing an increase in student enrollment, as close to 40,000 students are currently enrolled. The college is also entering a transition as they are about to launch a new website, and new student information system; also this semester the college has started offering brick and mortar courses at their campus in Albany, NY and Washington D.C. The school is also exploring doctorate programs, and a name change also, as it was once a university, once upon a time. Excelsior College diplomas and transcripts still mention "University of the State of New York" underneath the school name on the transcript and diploma, though.
Anyway, congrats TESC/TECU students and alumni. :hurray:

Let's wait and see... Even before the status change, TESC appears to be the most favored of the Big Three because of the name associated with the school and of course cause of the testing out, almost "no capstone" and cornerstone requirements, etc. Now, with the university status "conferal, " I can't seem to not see why TESU won't be flooded ... Who wouldn't want to be associated with Thomas Edison and a university?

Most EC students are not looking to test out of degrees, it was mentioned in the state of the college address at EC that students are requesting to take courses over exams at the college, which is why you can currently find an abundance of courses at the college. Currently, EC is the most popular school of the Big 3, as it has the largest student population of the big 3; however, on this forum TESU is the most popular, due primarily to specific degrees with no capstone ect. However, if you look through the forum archives on this site a few years ago EC was once the most popular school on this website, also. When the school made a major change in their academic policiy you began to see a large amount of students on here headed to TESC, matter of fact now you see more COSC students on here than ever before. To be honest, I don't even think most EC students even know much about testing out, or that TESU or COSC even exist.
All the big 3 schools are unranked, and largely unknown, TESU offers bachelors and masters degrees like all the other schools in the Big 3. :hurray:

It's been a while, but I got the alumni e-mail regarding the status change this morning and wanted to pop in and congratulate my fellow alumni here on the status change. Our alma mater is all grown up!
(Is it just me, or does the new seal just look plain ugly compared to the NJ state seal that they used on diplomas before?)

I honestly don't see what the big deal
as Exfactor said "In the United States university and college is generally interchangeable."
is there some real difference now that it has university in the name ?
if anything, doesn't all this mean LESS options for students (isn't this probably one of the reason they don't accept FEMA anymore)

as Exfactor said "In the United States university and college is generally interchangeable." It's not a big deal, but in NJ, the term "university" is protected by state law and designates comprehensive institutions. It just reflects TESC's growth into a comprehensive institution.

I actually don't think it is a big deal for me. I chose Thomas Edison because I am a NJ resident and it is a state school. It just seems to look better on a resume to attend a school in your home state vs university of Phoenix :p

This. A university implies that an institution of higher education is more comprehensive and offers a good selection of graduate programs. Since the use of the word university is not regulated in most states, however, there is no hard rule that schools follow when naming themselves. But, in states that do regulate the use of the word university i.e. New Jersey, there is a real difference between colleges and universities.
