I don't think anybody has a problem with people who are newbies having questions, its that we get tired of ignorant noobs who ask "what is the best study guide for US History II". From your post and the fact that you are squire I would surmise that you don't fall into the "noob" category. Ask away, just search before asking

Hey Guys--

Let's not go overboard with the idea of telling people to "use the search feature".

First of all, I know exactly what a lot of you are talking about in regards to some people looking like they put in no time reading the forum or using the search function before posting a question that's been asked a thousand times before. Then there are the ones that obviously exert ZERO effort to help themselves and send private messages asking for some very specific help--often with a deadline (i.e. I'm taking the test in two days and I need this and this ASAP).

It's frustrating, but keep in mind that with some of these people, the forum's a new and kind of a mysterious thing for them. I get several people a week who either respond to the automatic forum registration confirmation email with their question, thinking it'll magically show up on the forum, or others needing step by step instructions on how to create a post.

Of course, there are others who just have a case of being a bit lazy.

Regardless of what it is, I would ask that you please try to refrain from giving people a canned "use the search function" response. If you have to say it, pad it with a warm welcome!

Over the years, this forum has consistently been one of the warmest and most helpful communities I've seen on the Web--let's keep it that way! And if you find a newbie's question annoying, then just ignore it. Maybe someone else will come along with the energy to patiently help them out or maybe the lack of response will drive them to the search function...

I kinda feel like all of the new threads and posts help everybody get to know each other... I dunno, I may be a newbie myself, but I enjoy reading all the threads and helping out when I can. Even if it's already been posted a million times. It's what makes this board so special. (And addictive!!!)

:eek: I and many of the others that have posted on this thread never said we mind all questions. I think the fact that we have several thousand postings between us shows we do answer lots of questions. We are just saying if it is a general question try the search feature first.
When I see a question from a newbie that ask a specific question and shows enthusiasm to learn about testing out and this forum, I am happy to lead them in the right direction if I can.

Yes! Or say, "Here is what I think, but you can probably find even more on the subject in the archives."

Would very much get posted if everyone searched for everything he had a question on?

Agreed. Some of the older threads are a goldmine of good information. I learned a LOT by reading older threads.

I do exactly the same thing - and then try to convince myself that I'm actually doing something constructive because it's "degree-related". I tell myself, "it could be worse - I could be surfing aimlessly through eBay". But, even I don't believe me. :eek:
