Even if you don't live in Texas, this could apply to you if you get a degree from a Texas public university via distance education. It has everything to do with CLEP and DSST tests.
College For All Texans: Academic Fresh Start
Suppose you have college grades more than 10 years old that are terrible. Wouldn't it be great to wipe out those old grades? In Texas, you just might be able to. The cost of wiping out your old grades is that you can't use any of your credits that are more than 10 years old. Everything more than 10 years old goes away.
When you apply to a public university in Texas and invoke the Academic Fresh Start, none of your grades more than 10 years old can be used in grade point calculations. This could make it possible to get admitted to law school or medical school.
The problem with Academic Fresh Start is that your old credits and possibly even your degree "disappear" for admissions purposes. That's where CLEP and DSST come into the picture. You might need to earn a new degree. By choosing a degree from a school that is very friendly to credit by examination, you might be able to earn a completely new degree without spending too much money or taking too long. You could have a new degree and a new GPA that isn't brought down by old grades.
Obviously this is useful for a relatively small number of people. But if you have grades from years ago that are keeping you from realizing your dreams, this might be perfect for you.
You can earn a generic bachelor's degree from Lamar University (brick and mortar, dorms, football team) solely through distance education:
Lamar University Academic Partnerships
$150/credit hour for Texas residents, $201/credit hour for out-of-state tuition
Or get a bachelor's degree from any school in any state taking care that all credits are less than 10 years old, then use Academic Fresh Start to apply to a graduate program in Texas.
