In the Fall 2012, Live & Learn, on page 2, President Ebersole says, "The College took a giant step this Spring by offering a bachelor's degree that can be completed entirely through course assessments (exams)." My question is this: Which degree is this and where can I find it?
Anybody know the answer?

Here is my best guess:
Assessment Based Degree - excelsior.edu

It is nice to see that the college is starting to think in terms of testable degrees (plus capstone) and offering ways to facilitate that process. I also like seeing that they are offering Areas of Focus (minors) as part of these degrees; another one to add to the list is an Area of Focus in History.

They said testing alone in the verbiage. Yes, I know, you can't go very far w/o Information Literacy and a Capstone at Excelsior. Anyway, $10,000 sounds pretty spendy to me.

If this is the case, the wording was oversimplified a bit. Especially compared to traditional programs, it is a big step toward the direction we (at this forum) consider daily to balance a good education with the money, time, and energy spent. We know the price can be even lower, but $83 per credit for the whole degree is an improved starting point and will get students introduced to the savings involved in credit-by-exam.

The BA/BS in Liberal Arts through Excelsior College can be accomplished entirely through CLEP/DSST/ECE exams (excepting for the required capstone and info-lit classes), and if you're imaginative, you can probably figure out how to do a couple of the other ones too. Keep in mind that some of the DSSTs and all of the ECEs will leave you with a letter grade, so be careful. It's really easy to have 6 graded units, 3 in A, 3 in B, and end up with a 3.0 total GPA or something.
