Temping at a crappy job and need excuses to leave for other interviews.....
#1
Oh man, so I'm working at a recruiting agency. I originally started off as a temp who was sent to assignments at their client's offices..years ago. Just recently, they asked me to work in their actual agency as an office management assistant of sorts. I think it's a fancy way for them to make you feel special while they work you like a horse lol. Anyway, the position that I am in has had over 12 (YES, twelve) people in it in the last year. The average person lasts 3 months and leaves...or perhaps they are told that they are no longer needed. Who knows?

They have a pool of temporary workers they can pull from, as they are a staffing agency. I was asked to come in and cover someone who was going to the reserves and the "permanent" girl was going on vacation. I had to train two people after only 2.5 days on the job myself and will not go into further detail but to explain this job is the kind of job you use as a stepping stone. From the CEO, to management, to their lack of professionalism and organization, it's no wonder that JUST for that position there have been over 12 people in LESS than a year who came and went.

Anyway, I expressed a long term interest when I first started (before I knew how crappy things were lol) and was initially offered 2 weeks. They extended my "assignment" with them and I am now going past a month of working there. Yet, they continue to sneak around and interview other people to fill in for a permanent position. Way back in the beginning I took them to the side and asked why I wasn't being considered. I know I am an awesome worker. I asked them if there was something I needed to improve on or if I somehow did not qualify and they said "No, not at all, you have been great"....yet they are running around interviewing people. It's a tricky story and a long one, so I won't bore you to death.

I just need excuses for handling how to go to other interviews. This job sucks the happiness out of you and I simply look at it as a temporary paycheck to get me by. I hate it, really. I have two other places that want to interview me this upcoming week and they are good positions that pay more and offer permanent work and benefits. I do not want to pass that up while I bend over backward for this temporary job, because that's exactly what they try to get you to do. But if I can interview with both places, on, for instance, a Wednesday...what should I tell the agency I am working with now? I'll obviously need the day off...then there comes the point if I am hired and the other company wants me to work for them immediately. As a temporary worker, I don't feel I owe this place 2 weeks advance notice. I have told them I wanted to have some loyalty to them, but after seeing how shady they are, I feel like I need to look out for myself and if I gave them 2 weeks notice, they would tell me they don't need me and call in another temp for the next day. Not trying to be without work for 2 weeks.

Suggestions? I was going to try to give a 2 day notice if possible. I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I have a great feeling about these two interviews. They are two part interviews and I have a 3rd one as well. I just have so much faith that I will land ONE of these 3 jobs I am interviewing for. How do you "fib" to get out of a temp job to go interview for a job that could possibly be a long term career for you?

Interesting dilemma. Can you ask the company you are interviewing for to push the interview out a week and just take a personal day?
Could you do the interview over lunch?
Is there any reason why you can't just tell your boss that you need time off to interview? They are interviewing for your position so shouldn't you also be allowed an hour to interview?

I bet the culture you are experiencing there is a combination of the employment agency world where shadiness rules and NYC which is almost as corrupt and morally bankrupt as Obama's home town of Chicago.

CollegeStudent7,

Between work and school you've got a lot going on! Good for you!

I've hired and fired office help for years. My advice would be to tell them you have a drs appt, call in sick, or car trouble...whatever you feel comfortable saying. You need to go on those interviews because once they find the person for the job they are currently interviewing to fill, you will be replaced. They are telling you in no uncertain terms you are not the proper fit. A temp assignment is "at will" so you can tell them the same day you will not be in tomorrow. Unfortunately, the same holds true on their end, they can tell you today your services are no longer needed. No hard feelings that is the nature of the temp business.

Quite frankly, giving 2-4 wks notice is a courteous gesture to the company after working there at min 6mos because you will need them as a reference. Some walk you out the same day notice is given. If you are in an executive position the motivation for long term notice is to give the company time to fill your position, or to designate a replacement in time for you to train them. There is usually a nice incentive given to provide this service.

Good luck on your interviews!

It sure in the heck is! You've got that right. Unfortunately the two places I want to interview at are pretty far and it would take me longer than my one hour lunch break. I actually got these interviews through ANOTHER recruiting agency and my recruiter is just GREAT. She's really been trying to work with me and schedule super early or super late interviews, but I don't feel comfortable trying to have her bend over backward when there are tons of people who want a job and she is already being flexible. I told her I rather risk this temp job if it boils down to it..but of course I still would like to hold onto it JUST to be safe...for as long as I can.

I guess there's no real reason I can't tell my boss I need time off..I'm just afraid that the second I do that they will just call in another temp and I will be replaced. If I knew I was going to land one of these 3 interviews, I would feel much more comfortable. Normally, this isn't a problem..but with the economy being so terrible for 3 years, I guess I'm still fearful and want to keep saving as much money as possible.

Temping is the only work I can get in my region of supposedly low unemployment. This agency is treating me well. Recruiters should
schedule evening interviews. I met a lot of jerks at human resources
interviews. in my opinion job recruiters should treat job seekers with
the same courtesy as other business clients such as vendors, managers etc.

From what I am experiencing, most recruiters interview between 8:30am-5:30pm (my exact work hours Sad) and their clients (companies looking to hire) will throw out interview times that fall between 9-5. It's a drag, but they don't seem flexible as everyone is so desperate for work. It's like they are dangling bits of bacon in front of us hungry, under/unemployed dogs.
