Teaching degree using CLEP and DSST's

My brother wants to get a teaching degree with a concentration in mathematics. He has done some credits by exam (and plans to do more) and some through a local community college. He wants to get the degree in a reasonable timeframe and not spend a fortune.

Does anyone have any advice about what a good school to go with is? Is there anyone out there who has earned a teaching degree with a large portion of credits by exam?

Not sure where you live, but here in CA, you can get a teaching certificate without a teaching degree. You just get any degree, and then go through a 1-year program to earn your teaching credential (I have a friend doing it right this very minute). She has a degree in Marketing. She signed up for online courses for the credential through some sort of state-recommended program, and then is doing her student-teaching at her kids' elementary school.

So, I would find out what exactly he needs to get that teaching credential in his state. He might need a BA in Math, or Teaching, but he might be able to get by with a BA in Liberal Studies, and then do the rest online and student-teaching.

My son's favorite teacher at school is his math teacher - who just happens to have gotten an English degree. He absolutely loves her, the way she explains things in different ways, and makes math fun. All this from an English major who found she didn't enjoy teaching English, but did enjoy teaching math! Who would have thought?

I also live in CA and the requirements are quite tedious. I am almost done with my Bachelors Degree but I am told in order to get credentialed in CA you need CBEST, CSET, RICA, and a few other tests... I don't think its as easy as just doing a one year program and student teaching but if there is a way I would love to know it as that is what direction I was wanting to go.. I'm currently a Substitute Teacher here and I had to have 90 units, proof of enrollment in 4 year college, and my CBEST complete just to do that.

I never said it wasn't tedious, I just said that you don't have to have a specific degree in teaching, or math, to get your credential and become a math teacher (she has a business degree). I was more replying to the idea of which degree to get, and thinking that they could get a BALS degree quickly.

I will ask my friend what the program is, but it's definitely a year. And I do know that she was studying for exams as part of the program.
