Take ACE credit while attending UMPI
#1
I am wanting to go to a graduate program in the future. I am working on my degree thru UMPI using Sophia and Study.com. I understand that the credits that are through these providers are ACE, can they also be considered Regionally accredited if accepted by a regionally accredited university like UMPI? The graduate program states that all credits received must be from a regionally accredited source.

What do you think?

They are not considered regional credits. The degree you will get from UMPI will be.

Please clarify with the graduate school. They may be fine with something like CLEP (ACE) for the general education classes, but they expect the major classes to be from the school itself. That's essentially how UMPI works.

@kennetim000, just like your first thread, you're not giving us enough info to go with...  Seriously, It's really like asking 'does this shirt look good on me' without showing us the shirt!  Review your previous thread and the links I sent you.  How far did you go with the 90 credits at Sophia.org from that thread here? https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...ack-needed

As you didn't mention the institution or program you're telling us about... To answer your question, in short, you should be fine.  The main thing they want to see is you have a bachelors and some graded/RA credit, as most institutions know already you'll have CLEP options for credit (other sources of credit such as AP, IB, foreign credit, and challenge exams, etc).  Even for semi-competitive programs, all you need is about 30 credits RA/graded, unless it's specific on their website.

Does UMPI allow you to take Sophia courses while attending their program?

Yes.  It's good to let your advisor know what you're working on and planning to transfer in.  If you still have many Sophia courses to complete, I would advise to work on getting the bulk of them finished before enrolling at UMPI.

We normally recommend against it simply because with the pay by term model, time is literally money, and spending time on anything but UMPI courses can only slow you down.

Exactly, you should create a spreadsheet of what courses are required and you have taken. You'll know what you need to finish and the 30 UMPI credits you need at UMPI. So, you should complete the 90 credits for transfer then start the UMPI classes last. Paying extra subscriptions or sessions is not recommended, it's best to finish one provider at a time, then move to the next when that set of courses are completed.

Something else to keep in mind. Thus far, UMPI has allowed credit to transfer in while you're enrolled at UMPI, but this could change so it's not worth the risk. It also takes time away from working on courses at UMPI. The session flies by as you really only have 6.5 weeks to complete courses because you can't add any courses in the last 10 days.
