TESC or COSC degree plan?
#1
Hello everyone! So I joined this site a few months ago and have spent a decent amount of time reading through different threads and discussions but unfortunately I'm still a little unsure about the process.
To put it simply, I need a BA. There's no requirement for what kind of BA I need, as what I'm looking to do just needs a minimum of a BA in anything. I have my GED but no prior college.

For this job opportunity I need to acquire my BA by next year, so my question to you guys is what is the the most time efficient, and simple path? I've heard Tesc can be confusing, but it accepts the most transferred credits? (Correct me if I'm wrong please!) But i can't seem to find as much discussion on COSC. Whichever school has less restriction or requirements?

If anyone could possibly give me an example degree plan for either outlining the tests that need to be done for a simple degree, I would very much appreciate the help. I did join instantcert and plan to start my studies as soon as possible when I get a clearer idea of what path I need to follow.

Thank you so much to everyone who takes their time to read this and give me advice! As someone who's been working since 17 and never went to college, it feels like another world to me
And it's a little intimidating

Well you have several options just starting out. There are several benefits to each of the Big 3 colleges and it is hard to go wrong with any of them. I chose TESC myself because it is the quickest pathway for me; however, I am after a specific degree. Either way I found this: Sanantone's BA in Liberal Studies - Degree Forum Wiki

Sure you could just get a generalized bachelor degree but during this process consider other degrees such as business, social science, etc.... Since you are going to be putting so much work into it anyways. Now as I have already stated there are benefits to all 3 of the Big 3 schools, but TESC can be done fairly cheap with the pay per credit plan utilizing TECEPs and they require less upper level credits. Just figure I would put that out there but as I said they are all 3 good (There is a lot of dispute about which is the best, cheapest, etc). Hopefully that answered some questions. Good Luck

Well normally I would recommend sending your transcripts to each school and then figuring out which one has the fewest requirements left but... am I getting this right that you have *no* prior college? That's going to make things interesting. Zero to degree in a year is pretty ambitious.

All three schools are going to require 120 credits. All three have degrees that you can almost entirely test out of. TESC is probably your least expensive bet, if you're okay with taking TECEPs. TESC also has the benefit of requiring the least number of upper division credits. Excelsior has an extremely flexible general Liberal Arts program which you might want to take a look at. I don't know as much about COSC.

The easiest majors to test out of would be Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, or Business.

To start with, I would go ahead and study for and take CLEP College Composition, College Mathematics, Analyzing and Interpreting Literature, and one of the CLEP science exams (probably Biology or Natural Sciences). That would be 24 credits, and would cover some of your most significant gen ed requirements that you're going to need for pretty much any degree (Math, Science, and English Composition). Analyzing and Interpreting Literature is generally recommended as an easy first exam, and it's worth 6 credits so go for it.

Some other 6 credit CLEP exams include: Humanities, Social Science and History, English Lit, American Lit, and the other science exams. DSST Criminal Justice is also recommended for 6 credits now. I'm mentioning 6 credit exams because they take about the same amount of time to study for and take as the 3 credit exams do, but they get you closer to your goal faster.

To finish in a year, you're going to want to get in about 10 credits a month. That's 3-4 3 credit exams, or 2 6 credit exams every month (and also remember that you're going to probably need a capstone at the minimum, so plan to take at least one actual online class). So if you start with the 6 credit stuff you can probably get ahead of the game a bit.

The biggest decision you should probably figure out now is if you're more comfortable taking business coursework, or arts & sciences stuff. For me, I went with a Liberal Arts degree because I enjoy that stuff. I'm totally clueless on business. Plenty of people go for the business degree though, because they're more oriented that way, or it meets their needs better. Both are doable in a year, but they have dramatically different requirements.

You may also want to look into Straighterline if testing makes you uncomfortable. Plenty of people have been able to complete SL courses quite quickly, although I personally find exams to be the least time consuming option.
