TESC evaluation notes - Non-course Equivalency??
#1
I have been plugging away at a degree for the past few years now and this sits has taught me so much. I have finished two Aleks courses, intermediate and college algebra. They are showing up on the new evaluation system as *Ne= Non-course Equivalency. When I try to play around to figure out if I want to change my degree these courses don't get added in anywhere. So for example If I want to change to computer science, these courses don't even count as a mathematics course.

Also under the new catalog under oral communications I would think my Public speaking COM-209 course would fit but instead it is listed under other courses too. Is this legit or a glitch? I worked really hard on those three courses and I hate to see them just tossed to the side.

I tried to call the advisement line but I didn't want to wait on hold so I plan to open a ticket. But I was just wondering if anyone else knows what this Non-course Equivalency stuff is all about. Is it an Aleks thing?

Sounds like a glitch with OSS. The same thing happens to me. I am enrolled under the previous (2015) catalog and when I do a what if? with the new requirements (2016) it does the same exact thing to me. My government will not fit into the civics spot. The OSS what if? feature is unofficial, more for planning purposes. When it says non course equivalency (NE) it just means it was earned via testing or other alternative such as DSST, CLEP, Aleks, Straighterline etc. If it is a course from a RA college it will show up as TE (transfer equivalency). I have both showing up on my eval as meeting degree requirements. The best way to contact TESC is via e-mail or a help desk ticket. I have found calling to be a waste of time, unless you set up a phone advising appointment, even then you are still on hold in order to get transferred to the adviser. I had a phone advising appointment and spent 20 min. on hold waiting to be transferred.

Thanks. I figured it had to be a glitch or mistake. I think I will stick to my present degree eval because the new requirements look... I don't know what. TESC is changing so much but not in a good way sometimes. There is so much information out on the net, so many good MOOC courses and other ways to deliver learning but it seems that with all the new technology they still are looking to do things the more traditional way. I learned more from Aleks than most of my TESC online classes. Thomas Edison is stuck in the "read this big expensive book then write an essay about what you read" mentality. I guess I'm just frustrated with my boring courses this semester...:ack:

If you do want to switch, check with TESC on the policy. A few people have posted that if you remain within the same school you can keep the old requirements. If a student is enrolled in the BA program with Humanities and then decides to switch to Communications they would follow the catalog they enrolled under. But if a BA student switched to the BSBA then they would follow the new requirements. I'm not sure if that applies to the Gen Eds or the whole degree with the AOS. Either way it is a bit of a mess.

Thanks again. I will have to look into it further and decide if changing is even worth all the hassel.
