TESC capstone - When can I take it?
#1
Hi everyone, I'm doing a BA through testing (Social Studies - if anyone wants the spreadsheet showing the courses I'm happy to provide it) and I plan to enroll at TESC to complete it.

Since I'll be finishing my tests around February, and won't have to take any classes at TESC except for the capstone (LIB-495), I'm wondering if there's any way I can take the capstone before I finish all the CLEP/DSSTs?

I just don't much like the idea of prolonging my degree for 3 months after a high-powered testing spree just because of a single class.

Thanks for any and all replies in advance Smile

EDIT: I've read that one may take a CLEP/DSST while enrolled and apply it towards one's degree - is this true? Also, it might be worth noting that on TESC's catalogue, the Human Services capstone (HUS-495) does mention that all other courses must be completed first, but the SS capstone (LIB-495/OL) does not mention the same thing, but that's an implication at best.

Just about every school will apply CLEP/DSST to your degree after you've enrolled. Western Governors University is the only school I've heard of so far that will not let you update your degree plan after the initial evaluation. Sorry, I can't answer your main question.

I had this exact same question, so asked my college coach. She said that though it's usually taken towards the end of your degree to kind of "wrap up" your education, it doesn't have to be the very last class you take (sorry, I don't remember exactly why she said it was okay, just that she said it was. :leaving: ) I am going to be taking ~3 classes after I complete my capstone. Smile Sorry I don't have more details on this!

I completed the TESC capstone for the Applied Science & Technology degree earlier this year - I still have 9 more credits left to finish. I doesn't have to be your last class or even in your last semester, but should be done sometime near the end of your requirements being fulfilled.

You have several options.

Do what you didn't want to do and wait till you're finished testing and then start a 3 month long course.

Wait till you're about five months from finishing all your tests and other courses (save the capstone). Apply to TESC, get everything transferred, enroll. Take the capstone course while finishing up your tests. (Reason for the 5 months: Applying and enrolling can take 1-2 months, the course is 3)

Apply and enroll now. Start the course, and work on finishing your tests during or after the class.

The later two are probably going to be your best option. And no, the capstone doesn't need to you last course. It's supposed to be what, as Lady Grace said, wraps everything up, but it's still a course all the same. You can sign up for it at your leisure.

Thanks for the replies! Based on Publius' advice, I'm going to go ahead and enroll right now considering I'm 42 credits from completion and I expect to finish my tests in February.

So far this forum has saved me $50,000, two years of my life, and uncountable frustration.

What you can do is send your transcript requests off to the CollegeBoard and Prometric for your CLEPs and DSSTs (and/or wherever else you got some credit). Get those sent off, and go ahead and apply to TESC. Since we're heading into the holidays, I wouldn't be surprised if it takes a bit longer then usual. Nevertheless, sounds like you have enough tests to keep you busy (btw, once you've applied to TESC, you can have them directly sent to TESC). You're nearing the finish line! Best of luck, stay focused, and keep up the great work!

That's awesome how much time, money, and frustration you've saved! Guess that's why this is college revolutionized!

I applied a couple of hours ago.

Some info if anyone's wondering:

After applying, I spoke to a rep on the phone. She told me that I did not have to wait any length of time before enrolling - that as long as I've paid the application fee and the tuition fees ($75 + $3075 including the technology fee) then I can sign up for the capstone course immediately, starting in January. She said I don't even have to wait for my transcripts to arrive, so that's good too.

I've been having all of my scores sent to TESC anyway as I take the tests (and I've taken 3 CLEPs & 1 DSST so far in addition to my 39 B&M credits and 27 FEMA credits).

At this rate, I'll be completely done by the end of March. At that point, or before if I have time, I'll do what some members have requested: I'll set up a website which will allow people to create a custom degree plan based on testing equivalencies from TESC and the other colleges. I know how to do it, I just don't have the time as yet.

That's some great news! Congrats!
