TESC and GPA
#1
I'm only a few credits from finishing and I plan to graduate through TESC. Is it true that TESC does not give a GPA unless you take a course through them? I'm worried that I may risk losing my chance at pursuing a graduate degree if I don't have a GPA on the transcript. Can anyone advise what is the most painless way of getting a grade with TESC - perhaps TECEP??

I'm starting a graduate course with Harvard extension in another couple of weeks so I'll probably be way over my head with work if I do anything else right now.
Any thoughts/suggesions appreciated.

Thanks!!

Yes, TESC will not give you a grade just credits for classes or exams transferred in. As far as grad schools I think it all depends on the grad schools you're applying for. I think I've read of others on previous posts getting into grad schools without a GPA. But I've been looking at grad schools too and noticed many do require a GPA.

I'm sure someone else here will give you better advice on TECEP. Although, I've never taken one, I would think that would be a viable option for you if it does give you a grade...I wouldn't see why not because it was created by TESC. Good luck and congratulations on your soon to be graduation!

One nice thing is that many grad schools are somewhat flexible with the GPA requirement. Some will let you take the GRE (if they don't require it already) and use that. Some will let you basically sign up on probation of sorts, and see how your first couple classes go. If you do well in them, they'll move you out of probationary status, and you're on your way. Then again, if one doesn't do well in those first few courses, they may not have picked a good fit for them, school-wise, or may just not be cut out or ready/prepared for grad school.
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Wile E. Coyote, genius. I am not selling anything nor am I working my way through college, so let's get down to basics: you are a rabbit and I am going to eat you for supper. Now don't try to get away, I am more muscular, more cunning, faster and larger than you are, and I am a genius, while you could hardly pass the entrance examinations to kindergarten, so I'll give you the customary two minutes to say your prayers.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. So I guess I will just buckle down and take one of their courses just to get a GPA - don't want to risk not having it.
Apart from Harvard extension, I was also looking at George Mason University that requires a 3.5 GPA to be eligible to apply to their graduate program.

Thanks a lot for the feeback.

This is just for my curiosity but if one does take one class at TESC and ends up with a 4.0 does he end up graduating summa cum laude? Personally, I think I'd prefer to graduate with a 3.7, I don't think I could uphold that type of perfection. But that's just me.

TESC also does not give grades for TECEP's.

I have taken 2 courses with them and I have a 3.9 GPA, but I will not get any recognition for that. TESC does have an award to people who use a variety of methods to earn their degree, but I am not sure what the other criteria are.

I would think any graduate school that had a GPA requirement would want to see the whole transcript and would calculate a GPA using all courses with grades.

I'd like to add like others have posted that everything I've read so far is that if you take the GRE and do fairly decent schools will possibly waive the GPA. If you are concerned you should talk to (in person) the admissions advisor and explain your situation. Good luck! cheersmate

Linda, I'm glad I didn't take TECEPS...more expensive than CLEPS and no grade.

3.9 sounds great to me, a little imperfection shows character.

Hi Linda: So if my goal is to get a GPA, then I should forget about the TECEPs and take a regular course from TESC instead right??

I have taken courses from B&M schools so I'm hoping that the transcript will reflect those grades.

Thanks again

A GPA from TESC will only be from classes you take through them specifically (and they don't count TECEPS or practicums). They will not count grades taken from other B&M schools. If you need a GPA I would definitely take a class through them.

I didn't intend on continuing on to grad school so I thought this was no big deal. Well, now I'm headed that direction and I'm having to shuffle my plans a bit by taking some grad classes at Andrew Jackson to get a GPA so that I can apply for scholarships to help pay for tuition. Then I'll transfer to the university with the degree I want.

Good luck!
