TESC, Need Help Please
#1
Hello everyone, My name is Shannon and I've been lurking for awhile and trying to learn..

Anyways, I'm currently attending another university but I'm about to enroll, maybe, at TESC as well to finish up faster.

For all the experts out there, could you please advise me of a good path or degree program for the following credits I have thus far. I'm currently a police detective, so I have alot of law enforcement classes and TESC could grant more for my professional training, or so it seems???

Eng. 1010 3 credit
Eng. 1020 3 credit
US History 2 3 credit
Psych 1010 3 credit
Sociology 2010 3 credit
Philosophy 1030 3 credit
Geology 1040 3 credit
Liberal arts 1000 1 credit
Pol. Science El. 1 credit
Wellness Concepts 3 credit
Criminal Investigation 3 credit
Basic Criminal Law 1 credit
Human Behavior 3 credit
Patrol Operations 3 credit
Corrections Procedures 3 credit
Forensic Science 3 credit
Corrections Supervisor 3 credit
Priniciples of Supervision 2 credit
Military Science 2 credit
Physical Fitness 2 credit
CRJ 1030 Intro to Law Enforcement 3 credit
CRJ 1040 Intro to Security 3 credit
CRJ 1050 Intro to Corrections 3 credit
CRJ 1060 Intro to Criminology 3 credit
Criminal Justice 3 credit (DANTES)
Intermediate Algebra 3 credit
Mus 1030 Music Appreciation 3 credit
Math 1010 Mathematical Thought 3 credit
CRJ 3410 Domestic Terrorism
POLS 2010 American National Government
CRJ 3430 Procedures of Criminal Investigation
CRJ 3030 Terrorism and Law
CRJ 3430 Management of Incidents of Terrorism
COMM 1010 Public Speaking

Additionally, I would have the full 25 FEMA courses and 3 NFA courses.

I'm signed up to take the following tests next week:
Dantes Astronomy
CLEP A & I Literature

Thanks in advance for any help, with figuring out which courses could go where etc.

Welcome!! First, what degree are you going for?

At TESC or any college, there is the basic BA and then there is everything else lol. Your degree path (if in LE) requires a bit of specialization in order to evaluate it. Truely, I would suggest completing an official evaluation/application with TESC. This would involve some cost- the application fee (I think it is $75) as well as an official transcript from the college you have those credits (maybe another $10). You can skip your CLEP or DSST transcripts for now ($20 and $20) because those are easy to evaluate. The astronomy is 3 credits natural science and A&I Lit is 6 credits humanities.
They will plug in anything you send in that initial application phase and spit out a list of what you have/vs what you need. At that point, you can see if you will have any time or money savings going with TESC. If you have mostly gen eds outstanding, then it will be much cheaper to CLEP those- if you have mainly LE classes, there won't be a gain because TESC only accepts those classes- they don't teach them or offer tests.
Additionally, the college you are at now may accept CLEP, check their written policy first- you might be able to stay where you are!
Now- if you are looking at a BA, ignore what I said and don't apply yet- those are easy to evaluate. Wink
All the best!!

Thanks for the reply!!

I'm thinking about the following degrees:
BSHS in Administration of Justice
BA in Criminal Justice
BSHS in Emergency Disaster Services
BS in Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness

Each of these, should fit my classes well. A question, is TESC liberal when assigning certain courses under the required section or making it an equivalent?

Thanks for any insight!!

TESC will be pretty standard as far as assigning courses into a section (see what follows)- for example, you won't have any luck moving a course out of a free elective area into a gen ed area, and you won't have any luck getting them to budge on course numbers. I helped you assign them to see where your credits will get classified.
However, where they are A+ is how they allow you to earn credit. You can take it local and transfer it in, take it online at your college or another, use CLEP or DSST, use TESC's alternate class options like ePack and several others. I know they will take any job training as long as it was ACE Evaluated.

On your list, these classes will be evaluated as general eds no matter which degree you choose:
ENGLISH COMP: 6
Eng. 1010 3 credit (ENGLISH)
Eng. 1020 3 credit (ENGLISH)
HUMANITIES: 15
COMM 1010 Public Speaking (HUMANITIES)
Philosophy 1030 3 credit (HUMANITIES)
Mus 1030 Music Appreciation 3 credit (HUMANITIES)
CLEP A & I Literature (HUMANITIES)
SOCIAL SCIENCE: 16
US History 2 3 credit (SOCIAL SCIENCE)
Psych 1010 3 credit (SOCIAL SCIENCE)
Sociology 2010 3 credit (SOCIAL SCIENCE)
Pol. Science El. 1 credit (SOCIAL SCIENCE)
Criminal Justice 3 credit (DANTES) (SOCIAL SCIENCE)
POLS 2010 American National Government (SOCIAL SCIENCE)
NATURAL SCIENCE AND MATH: 12
Geology 1040 3 credit (NATURAL SCIENCE)
Dantes Astronomy (NATURAL SCIENCE)
Intermediate Algebra 3 credit (MATH)
Math 1010 Mathematical Thought 3 credit (MATH)
GEN ED ELECTIVE: 1
Liberal arts 1000 1 credit (UNSURE- assume gen ed elective for now)

Based on any of the above majors, these will certainly be FREE ELECTIVES (not general education electives)
Priniciples of Supervision 2 credit (FREE ELECTIVE)
Physical Fitness 2 credit (FREE ELECTIVE)

Depending on your major, FEMA can be considered "in major" but if it isn't your major specifically, they will be FREE ELECTIVE (note that if these are free elective you do already have some free elective credit- you don't want to end up doing too many)
25 FEMA courses and 3 NFA courses.

These will be the classes that make up your major. Review the credit distribution tables on the TESC website and see if you can match titles as best you can. It won't be a sure thing, but it gives you an idea. You have a lot of credit here, if it were me, I'd take the degree plan with the highest utility- and you'll have to see which one that ends up being.
CRJ 3430 Procedures of Criminal Investigation
CRJ 3030 Terrorism and Law
CRJ 3430 Management of Incidents of Terrorism
CRJ 3410 Domestic Terrorism
CRJ 1030 Intro to Law Enforcement 3 credit
CRJ 1040 Intro to Security 3 credit
CRJ 1050 Intro to Corrections 3 credit
CRJ 1060 Intro to Criminology 3 credit
Criminal Investigation 3 credit
Basic Criminal Law 1 credit
Patrol Operations 3 credit
Corrections Procedures 3 credit
Forensic Science 3 credit
Corrections Supervisor 3 credit

These last ones I have no idea. Best case, Wellness and Behavior would be social science and Military Science into math, worst case is that they would all be free electives.
Wellness Concepts 3 credit
Human Behavior 3 credit
Military Science 2 credit

Thank you for the insight!! I'm signed up for 3 more terrorism courses next semester at Austin Peay State University, which is my current school, so I'm thinking that the Homeland Security major at TESC would be the most beneficial as far as transfers.

During the initial application, with the $75.00, do they give you a detailed course evaluation, as in which of my classes fit into where? Or do I have to wait to get an advisor to match up courses with my degree plan, after I pay the enrollment fee?

Thanks again!!!

Yes they'll give you a link to myEdison account which will show a detailed and complete evaluation of your credits and thier placement into the program you select. You have to pay the $75, send our credits over, and wait 2-4 weeks. Once you enroll you'll get an advisor. They don't give much help to anyone who hasn't paid the acceptance fee and without a ID number which you'll get with an accpetance letter after you apply and send the $.

If your highly considering TESC, go ahead and apply. Anyone else here can give you good advice but until TESC tell you for sure that credit X fits requirement Y in the program. Looks like you're not far from being done just by the number of credits you have

Best of luck.

Do you mind me asking what you hope to gain by enrolling at TESC? You are nearly done, and your current college accepts CLEP-they are an official testing center too... just wondering.

TESC for the most part has no equivalents to most of their Homeland Security courses. The reason for this is because it's a fairly new program and according to several advisors I spoke to they want to keep it mostly in house. Specifically HLS-355 Critical Thinking for Homeland Security, HLS-420 Homeland Security: Preparedness, Prevention and Deterrence, and HLS-429 Protecting the Homeland —Response and Deterrence, HLS-498: Capstone in Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness, SOS-492: Research Methods in the Social Sciences, and HLS-410 Counter-Terrorism: Constitutional and Legislative Issues have no course equivalents.

SOS-440: Terrorism has a course equivalent through Penn Foster so I'm sure you might be able to find others that match up as well. SOC-322: Cultural Diversity in the U.S. has an equivlent through Excelsior (testing out).

I would strongly suggest another program unless you want to take all of these courses. I am almost done with the program and I love the courses but you seem to have a lot of credits and it might be quicker to pursue another program where everything might fit.

Hope this helps! Big Grin

I plan on finishing my degree with Austin Peay for sure, but won't be done until maybe end of summer 10 or possibly fall 10.. I'm receiving the GI Bill for a full-time student. Anyways, my current employer gives incentive pay for both bachelor and associate degrees, so I would like to use my credits/FEMA/testing to complete a degree with TESC quick! APSU does not allow any testing once your considered a junior!! And only allows a certain amount of "non-traditional' hours. Even though, at this point I'm only lacking in my major courses so it doesn't matter anyway.

I really appreciate the help thus far.. I'm just trying to find a program which would allow the best overall subs. and not waste any credits I have.
