TESC Math Question
#1
I am creating a degree plan for my husband through TESC (not yet enrolled). He was an engineering major at our last university, so he has already taken all of the higher math courses: precalc and trig through calculus 3. He never took college algebra or similar courses because he covered them in high school. Now we are trying to fill out general ed credits in the quickest, most cost effective way for a BA in Natural Science and Math. Specifically, we are looking at Straighterline and ALEKS courses. Can he take the lower algebra courses and still get general elective credit for them, or will TESC duplicate them?

He can still get credit for the algebra courses as well as the stats courses if he hasn't already taken them. If there are any free electives remaining, he can also use the FEMA courses to fill those out for free.

Yes! Sequence is not a factor at TESC, you can do classes in any order. (which isn't the case at all colleges!)

ALEKS would be the way to go in his case. I'd guess he could knock out all the lower level maths on the list of ACE evaluated classes through ALEKS in a weekend ($20), and finish the other three stats classes before his first month expires. He is looking at about 15 math/science credits, overflow spills into gen ed electives first, then free electives.

Also, he can take CLEP's College Math locally (does not duplicate ALEKS) and that's another 6 credits for under $100. Again, overflowing his math/science credits, then into gen eds, and finally into free electives.

One thing to remember, is that when your major (math in this case) is also a gen ed requirement, he must fill both. So, by taking lower level maths, he will actually guarantee that his upper level maths fill spots inside his major- in other words, he won't need to take HIGHER maths, he can go in backward using 100 level maths to plug the holes.

Finally, there is FEMA for any remaining free electives. (not gen ed, but $$ FREE $$)

I'd do them in the order I listed them so you have maximum utility.

TESC categorizes courses slightly different than most other schools. They break them up into two buckets: 100 & 200 and higher. They put them where they believe they go regardless of the level (course number) used at the school where you took the class. Therefore, their (TESC's) own course numbers provide a good guide. In the two classes you asked about, Pre-Cal is a 100 (LL) course and Stats is a 200 (UL) course.

Wonderful news! This should make things a lot easier since we now live five hours away from the nearest testing center. Smile

Would Developmental Writing (Straighterline) count for a humanties course? I hadn't even thought of using an english course, but since backfilling is an option it could negate another exam.

Unfortunately, Dev. Writing along with Intro Algebra are listed as "not-for-credit" courses by SL. They are preparatory for the follow-on courses.

For humanities, hit up Penn Foster. Since you are such a distance from a testing center that will be a good choice. I am taking Intro to Literature and Art appreciation right now. TESC won't take them directly, but they will through ACE.

Can you tell me if Intro to Lit and Art App. have final projects or proctored finals? My daughter is trying to finish quickly and is hoping to avoid the lag time of waiting 7-10 days for the final. Thanks!

There are no projects that I can tell, just a proctored final. Anyone with an associates degree that isn't related can proctor it.
