TESC Computer Science Plan Help
#1
Hi Guys,
I am planning to get my bachelors from TESC and after talking to the advisers came up with the attached plan. I haven't submitted the plan to TESC yet.
Would you be able to look at it and suggest anything that I may need to change or if there are any other ways to get the credits?

Here is the web eval from TESC for your reference.

In your plan, you kind of have the diversity and ethics requirements mixed up. All three of the exams you listed can be used as a Personal and Social Responsibility Elective, but you need to switch Ethics in America and Intro to Sociology. Intro to Sociology will fulfill the Diversity/Global Literacy requirement, but Ethics in America will not. Do your really want accounting, economics, and statistics as free electives? There are easier and cheaper alternatives. TEEX, Kaplan PLA, and NFA are free. Saylor tests are only $25 each.

Have you decided which computer science electives you're going to take because you have more options listed than needed?

A little note.

For your needed 21 computer science electives take Straighterline C++ . It will give you 4 lower credits. Then take free TEEX for IT professionals, which will give you 2 upper credits. Two mentioned courses combined are 6 credits.

Then get 5 upper credits courses (15 credits): 4 from TESC that you marked on your plan - COS 311,330, 352,351 and DSST - CIS 311. And you are done with CS electives.

CIS-344 is allowed in the CS area of study?

Yes, they counted it for me. I enrolled in December 2014.

They counted only TEEX for IT professionals, other TEEX courses went to free electives.

Hmmm. That's interesting. Then, maybe someone could just take the DSST for the full 3 credits.

I agree. It is a great idea to take DSST (CIS 344) for upper credits, I suggested it to hightecrebel on the forum few days ago.
Take for upper credits:
CIS 301 - DSST Management Info Sys
CIS 344 - DSST Fund Cyber Sec
CIS 311 Database Management ( TESC or Chadron)
COS 352 Operating systems ( TESC)
COS 330 Computer architecture ( TESC)

For myself personally, I took 1 credit upper credit course that was really interesting for me ( Pearl programming) from state university where I live ( for in state tuition) and combined it with 2 upper credits from TEEX. So, TEEX ( instead of DSST) in my situation worked out very well.

I realize you haven't made a decision on this requirement yet, but I would take Linear Algebra over Discrete Math. Obviously it's one less UL course you need, but it's hard not to meet the UL requirement for a CS degree anyway. The reason I say this is because while some would say that Discrete Math is more useful to someone in a computing-related field (and they would have a point), in my research there are far more quantitative graduate programs with a Linear/Matrix Algebra prerequisites than those with a Discrete/Finite Math prerequisite. You can take one of the two and teach yourself the other, but teaching yourself doesn't put credits on a transcript for graduate admissions.

If OP is planning on Master's degree in the future - he should look for the program requirement he is interested in. For example, in the Master's program that is interesting to me - Discrete Math is a requirement. If OP is not planning on Master's - your idea to take Linear Algebra for upper credits is great.
